We saw Lucinda and her band, Buick 6 perform last night at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary!! Buick 6 opened and went for almost an hour. They were very impressive and the set was all instrumental, with the exception of “Cinnamon Girl” which they sang very well!!!

Lucinda looked and sounded great last night!! She was very relaxed and didn’t use her “cheat book” as much as the last time we saw her in Calgary a couple years ago… she played songs old and new (sorry I don’t have a “set list”) – I especially enjoyed “Honey Bee” and “Little Rock Star” off her new album.. my husband thought she played too many “slow ones” to start the show off… but I love everything Lucinda does.. just her voice and her presence is awesome to me… I did notice she was not as “edgey” as I’ve seen and loved her in the past.. like with “Righteously” – the first time I saw her perform it at the Folk Festival it was very raunchy and raw.. not so last night..

In her encore she covered “Four Strong Winds” by Ian Tyson… an Alberta boy… so the crowd really enjoyed that. This was my 3rd time seeing Lucinda – I hope she continues to come to Western Canada. I think it would be awesome to see her at a small venue .. close up. Up to now, we’ve seen her at the Folk Festival… far back in the crowd; at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary… up in the 2nd balcony – and then last night at the Jack Singer Concert Hall – in the mezzanine section – 2nd section back!! Next time I’m getting BETTER TICKETS!!!

It was a joy seeing her anyways!!

Well, this author hits it in on the head, here. What a great review… “Few artists do disheveled as spectacularly or as charmingly as singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams…her Jube appearance made it clear that the odd stumble is just another cool part of the package with this strange lady. Well written for sure!

Great show last night by Lucinda and the boys.
I think the Jack Singer is an excellent venue for Lucinda as the sound is great and its more intimate than the Jube. We were lucky enough to be 10 rows from the stage in the centre. However, it would be nice to see her at Flames Central or Bowness Comm. Hall for a caberet or dance hall atmosphere as the Calgary crowds tend to need lubrication to get up and dance/rock out or even sing along.

Setlist to the best of my memory:
Side of the Road (Lu and Doug only)
    Real Love
    Tears of Joy
    Overtime
    People Talkin’
    Greenville
    Out of Touch
    Jailhouse Tears (duet with Doug)
    Fruits of My Labour
    Little Rock Star
    Essence
    Pineola
    Come On
    Changed the Locks
    Real Live Bleeding Fingers
    Honey Bee
    Righteously
    Encore:
    Four Strong Winds
Its A Long Way to the Top If You Wanna Rock’n’Roll

It is very likely that was the first time an AC/DC song was performed live at the Jack Singer Concert Hall and hopefully not the last. It was an inspired performance for the most part and thoroughly enjoyable.
I may have missed one or two songs and the order may not be exact but its close enough for R’n’R.
If anyone notices any errors or omissions please feel free to make the corrections.
Come back soon Lucinda and Buick 6!
I want to say thanks to whoever put a Twisted Sister pin on my jacket last night. Must have been the person right behind me but they were gone before I noticed it was there. Not sure what I did to earn the honour but thanks again.

And I always thought “Four Strong Winds” was a Neil Young song off his “Comes a Time” album. But looking at the credits, indeed Ian Tyson, a fellow Canadian gets the credit for writing the song. I never knew that, thanks for the education groovingroomer. I’ll have to check out some more of this Alberta boy’s music.

Regardless, it must have been awesome to hear her cover that great old song.

It was great to hear Lucinda sing Four Strong Winds here in Alberta. Interesting side note about this song; it is the first song Ian Tyson ever wote. He has written many since but this is his best known. Look for the original by Ian and Slyvia Tyson.

That is so beyond belief that LW played 4 Strong Winds… Wow–I would have loved to be at those rehearsal sessions! Anyone got a copy of this in mp3 format to share? I know it’s a reach!

I think last night was my 11th Lucinda show over the last 16 years and it might have been the best.

I agree with previous posts – the band (and Lu) seemed very relaxed. The set list was a great journey through Lu’s albuims and that venue is fabulous. I saw the Edmonton show on Sunday as well and as much as I looked forward to seeing a show in such a small venue (around 500 seats) a bigger theatre with great sound like Jack Singer really did make for a spectacular evening. I can’t imagine there’s a bad seat in there either. I think the Winspear might have been a better Edmonton choice… (I wasn’t lucky enough to see the show there a few years back with the Swifty’s but I continue to hear how good it was)

Anyway both shows were great – I felt very lucky to see that acoustic version of Side of the Road last night in Calgary. The Edmonton show was the choronological walk through all the albums – also a great selection of Lu’s music.

when i read this, i rubbed my eyes and looked again…….and instantly thought, i HAVE to have this.
oh please make this a regular song, how we need to hear it!
and side of the road, my favorite lucinda song (if there is such a thing, next would be ventura….
    i think)
sigh, i’d have been in heaven at this show, with a laid back lu…..LUCKY PUPS!

I had a great time at the show last night: I agree with everyone who enjoyed the sound at the venue. Can I put in my vote for the version of “Essence”? I thought it was the best performance of that song I have ever heard. I’ve been following recent set lists, and I thought we heard the best selection of those recent ones I’ve seen. LW did a great job of showcasing the new record, but I really appreciated hearing material from WWT. That record never gets tired. There is no reason for her to “sing” the lyrics to “Righteously,” though. (She made a comment about smarty-pants reviews of her “rap.”) “Standard” delivery of those words are just fine with me!

One last note about the Jack Singer… It’s difficult for people to move around, and I have always thought that the proximity of the concession encourages people to go out for a quick drink or two in intermissions. After “Cinnamon Girl,” I was ready to roll, and then everyone walked over us (twice!) to grab a beer before Lucinda proper. So, to groovingroomer’s husband, I can only say that I was glad to get a chance to get settled back in with some atmospheric stuff before LW rocked out.

Doesn’t she look like she should always hold a guitar? It’s like she was born with one!

I was at the show to review for an online publication, so I wrote down the setlist as part of my assignment:

    Side of the Road
    Real Love
    Tears of Joy
    People Talkinโ€™
    Jailhouse Tears
    Greenville
    Overtime
    Fruits of My Labor
    Pineola
    Out of Touch
    Little Rock Star
    Essence
    Come On
    Changed the Locks
Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings
    Honey Bee
    Righteously

    Encore:
Four Strong Winds (Ian & Sylvia cover)
Long Way to the Top (AC/DC cover)

You can read my review here: http://andythesaint.wordpress.com/2008/11/12/concert-review-lucinda-williams-calgary-ab-11-10-08/ (which is my personal blog, its also featured on Blogcritics.org, albeit with a mistake that I can’t correct about the setlist).

Hey Andy thanks for posting the setlist in the correct order. I read your review and surfed your blog, keep buying that vinyl. Lots of good used vinyl to be found in Calgary try Hot Wax, Recordland, Sloth to name a few.
To those of you who saw Lucinda in Edmonton, what venue did she perform at and was the setlist the same? I’m particularly interested in the encore of 4 Strong Winds, which is the closing song of the EFMF every year. Thanks!

65 Galaxie – the Edmonton show (well actually St Albert show) was at the Arden Theatre in St Albert. And the set list was quite different – it started with a couple songs off her first album and ran chronologically through her albums with a song or two off of each along with a little story by Lucinda about where she was in life/career then…

There were maybe 5 or 6 songs in common but the show had a very different flow. LW was changing guitars every song or 2 it seemed and I kept thinking how much work that was. And the encore had 3 songs – but no Four Strong Winds. I can’t think right now what the third encore song was – but for some reason I think it might have been a cover. And the other two were Joy and Long Way to the Top…
