JoyThe venue was a club type atmosphere with standing room everywhere within vicinity of the stage. The front part of club has two bars, partioned off by wall, with seating but stage was not visible. I arrived about 50 minutes before start of show, securing a 4th row “seat.” A very sweet couple waved me in to a 2nd row “seat” toward the end of the show. No more neck craning for me at that point. Bloomington is John Mellencamp’s current hometown. There were 5 ladies behind me I started chatting with before the show, all Bloomington residents. They told me they drove to Detroit last summer to see Lucinda open for JM. They weren’t interested in JM, they went to see Lucinda…humorous to me. 😆 One lady’s name was Linda. She told me she was thinking about changing it to Lucinda. During the show, a daughter of one of the group, showed me a text from Linda. It said…”I just changed my name to Lucinda” 😆
Lu started the show, as noted above, by coming on stage and proclaiming “great crowd!” After “Motherless Children” she said “I love this place!” It was packed and the crowd was enthusiastic. Lu explained “Happy Woman Blues” was written while homesick, living in NYC with a struggling singer songwriter. “Metal Firecracker” had Lu telling the crowd it referenced a tour bus, and her time spent with an old boyfriend on that bus. She said she didn’t have to worry about that anymore because she was married now and showed everyone her ring finger. Lu also told the same story as in Milwaukee in regards to “Memphis Pearl.” Lu passed along Eric’s take after playing “Essence” as …”that’s some Mick Ronson sh*t there.” “Atonement”, according to Lu, is a Southern Gothic Bible Belt Evangelical song influenced with ZZ Top music. She absolutely belted this song. The original setlist had “I Am So Happy I Found You” listed, however, it was dropped, hence my slight disappointment with setlist. I would have loved to hear that again as well as “Happy.”
I think Lu loved the venue. She ended the show by saying she loved the small stage and playing in a rock and roll club.
I was hanging around hoping for a setlist. Suddenly, Nick stepped on stage and I watched as he tossed a drum head out (this after the lights were on and everyone is leaving.) I watch as it flies by, hits the ceiling fan behind me, bounces forward and lands right beside me! With drum head in hand, I left without a setlist (but returned after buying some merch) and scored one as they were packing equipment. One was still taped to the stage, but I was given one from a folder. Speaking of merch, Susannah with an “h” sends greets! She remembered me from the Covington show.
I stepped outside to get the band to sign the drum head. As you can see, Butch put “Butch likes mint gum”. Eric and Chet were hanging, I showed them the drumhead with Chet signing first. He put “Chet likes cinnamon”. Not to be outdone, Eric signed “Eric likes Chet.” Along comes David, and he pondered a minute or two and signed “David likes everyone!”
I left shortly after getting the drumhead signed. I was told earlier Lu is still in recovery mode from the wedding and probably wouldn’t show and with a 2 1/2 hour drive on a school night it was just as well.
Looking forward to Chicago shows #2 & #3.

Thanks for all the details, CB.September 24, 2009 at 7:45 pm #40719tntracyParticipantThanks for the report, Lafayette, and congrats on that drum head. Quite a score…

September 24, 2009 at 9:57 pm #40721LafayetteParticipantThis article has photo of Lu from last night and I have to say, probably the best part of this article. It’s not very well written IMO. BTW…Lu had some rocking cowboy boots on. Black with silver studs all over. Hoo boy, they were awesome.

September 25, 2009 at 2:55 am #40722RainydaymanParticipantNice review LaFayette. Nice recent setlists, very different than last year’s setlists…….than even this summer’s. This is great.
September 25, 2009 at 6:50 pm #40723TOverbyParticipantSorry to hear that you were slightly disappointed with the setlist- it was very close to being a bit more different. Lu was very close to doing two different acoustic songs to start with. She was working on them that afternoon on the bus and they almost made the setlist, but at the last minute she wasn’t sure they were ready yet. I Am So Happy I Found You was a last minute pre-encore backstage decision by Lu to skip it. She thought the crowd might be a little too revved up for it. You will see it again. It seems that a little buzz has started about that song-I got an email from a friend of Lu’s that it is the #10 blog post on Expecting Rain.com which is a site that collects and ranks blogs that are all things Bob Dylan-it also has some reportedly good video footage of the song from Minneapolis.
Anyway, I think you will see the setlists on this leg continue to revolve and evolve. We had a band dinner last night to discuss that very topic-especially the early songs, which Lu is in the process of picking. The band can’t really work up those until Lu decides which ones to do because her voice has changed a lot from 30 years ago so she has to sit down and figure out new keys for every song. I’m really looking forward to the NY shows because I think there will be more songs from every record and some surprises-maybe even a couple things that weren’t on albums. In any event she’s really loving doing these shows and that’s always a good thing. Also have to mention how great Lu and the band thought the Bloomington crowd was. One of the best all year- she had a ball–in fact the whole Nothing In Ramblin’ blues jam was completely spontaneous. The band did not know they each going to get a solo right up until Lu called for it-every great once in awhile she will do that when she’s really having fun. It was a really good night. Indiana is 2 for 2 this year.September 25, 2009 at 7:02 pm #40724RainydaymanParticipantHey Tom,
Were you referring to me about the setlists? I’m pleased with the new setlists. I like to see Lucinda mix it up. Thanks for the info.See you in a few hours in Greensboro.

Yeah, as much as I’d love to hear “Hot Blood” in NYC, I won’t fault Lu at all for not playing it. That high part in the chorus has got to be a bitch to sing!

Cool, I’m really looking forward to NY too, Tom. BIG time! And, it is only one week away!! Woo hoo!!

September 25, 2009 at 8:27 pm #40727LafayetteParticipantThe solo parts were great, Tom, in “Nothin’ But Ramblin”, absolutely. I think it was during this song Lu was doing the “I’m in awe” wave to them. I might also add the band is so very tight now. They are having fun on stage compared to when Doug was playing. Eric (I love him) was all smiles that night.
Don’t get me wrong about the setlist, it wasn’t a total disappointment. I was just being selfish wanting to hear the Hank song again! Clearly, it was an energetic crowd (with Buick 6 as well) I also would like to add a few other things that I didn’t include in my initial report. When I go to shows, especially if I’m by myself, I like to find out why other fans are there as well. Hence, my conversation with the 5 ladies behind me. After I made it up to the “2nd row”, almost to the end of the show, I overheard this one lady tell her friend that the show was the best they had ever seen (of any artist).
Lastly, as I was watching Lu play, I could only think of something my one Mellencamp friend says all the time while watching JM play (we always tell her to affectionatley “shut up already.)” She is always saying ” I love him” lol.
So, as I was watching Lu that night, all I could think was… “I just love her” and how my Mellencamp friends would be telling me affectionately to “shut up already.”
Funny about the concern over the voice change. Mellencamp said in an interview during his “Words and Music” tour (a compilation of his greatest hits) that the young John Mellencamp wasn’t taking into account the old John Mellencamp would be singing those early songs one day and what was he thinking writing in such a high key 😉
See you in Chicago. Looking forward to those shows, especially the “West” night 😉
September 25, 2009 at 10:19 pm #40728LafayetteParticipantNot sure if this is the clip on the site you spoke of, Tom, but I did find this on YouTube.
Plan To Marry / I’m So Happy I Found You …it doesn’t get any better than this.
September 25, 2009 at 11:58 pm #40729tonygKeymasterExcellent videos. Some good shots of the TTFF rockin out too. 😆
September 26, 2009 at 7:47 pm #40730Disco StuParticipantGreat review, Lafayette. I’m glad you enjoyed the show (and that drum head is pretty cool), and I understand what you mean about the inevitable disappointment that’s going to come now whenever she doesn’t play I’m So Happy I Found You, regardless of how good the rest of the show is. I’ve watched the Youtube video you mentioned numerous times, and I’m still in awe of what she did with that song. It would probably be another addition to our wedding playlist if the album had already been released.
I’m really looking forward to the NY shows because I think there will be more songs from every record and some surprises-maybe even a couple things that weren’t on albums.
Oh boy…this sounds interesting. 😉 Thanks for all the info, Tom.
