Lucinda’s show at the Alabama Theater blew me away. Even though I’ve been dealing with some family issues for the last week, and arrived at the show in a somber mood, by the end of her show, she’d gotten my mind off my troubles, which is why I love music so much. Sometimes, in spite of yourself, you get transported somewhere else. There were curfew issues, and she had to be off the stage by 11:00, and she started late and ran a little over. I can’t remember the exact set list, as I wasn’t taking notes, but I do remember that she only did ‘Come On’ from West, and the rest of the show was dedicated to her earlier records. Here’s what I remember, and I know the order’s not quite right:

    Pineola
    Lake Charles
The Night’s Too Long (had to restart after getting about halfway through the song)
    He Never Got Enough Love
Still I Long For Your Kiss
    2 Kool 2 Be 4gotten
    Are You Down?
Jailhouse Tears (w/Doug P as the long-suffering stoner boyfriend 🙂 Had to restart because she was in the wrong key)
    Real Live Bleeding Fingers
    Honey Bee
    Righteously
    Come On
    Joy/Riders on the Storm

    Encore:
    Ode to Billie Joe
    I Live My Life
Get Right with God (with Charlie Louvin)

I may have missed some, and hope someone who was at the show can fill in my gaps. Lucinda seemed to be having a really good time, and praised the beauty and sound of the venue. The Alabama Theater is a beautiful venue, but I think I’d rather see her at a general-admission stand-up place. I’d waited for years to hear her do “Ode to Billie Joe”, and got my wish last night, so thanks, Lucinda! By the end of the night, she and the incomparable Mr. Louvin had turned the Alabama into a 2,000-seat revival tent, and had taken us all to church. While we all would have gladly stayed there another few hours to hear her entire catalogue, I know I left feeling transported and satisfied with the show she’d put on.

Thanks to both Charlie Louvin and Lucinda and her kick-ass band…don’t wait six more years to come back Miss Lucinda, you hear??

    Rachel –

Gald you enjoyed the show! I agree, it was fantastic. That was the 10th time I’ve seen Lucinda, and it was one of the best, if not the best, shows I’ve had the privilege to see.

Your set list is close – the order is a little wrong. I took notes – here is what I have:

    Pineola
    Lake Charles
The Night’s Too Long (False Start)
    The Night’s Too Long
    He Never Got Enough Love
    Crescent City
    Jailhouse Tears (False Start)
Jailhouse Tears (Lu said at the end this song will be on the next album!)
    2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten
Still I Long For Your Kiss
    Are You Down
    Righteously
Real Live Bleeding Fingers And Broken Guitar Strings
    Come On
    Honey Bee
Joy / Riders On The Storm
    Unsuffer Me

    (Encore)
    Ode To Billy Joe
    Live My Life
Get Right With God (w/ Charlie Louvin)

I agree about “Ode To Billy Joe” – I love that song, and the only other time I have heard her play it was 2 or so years ago at the Ryman in Nashville where she said she was playing it as a birthday present for her road manager. I love to hear her play that song. I was also pleased to hear some of her older material – she mentioned that playing the 5 night stand in LA made her “fall in love” with some of it all over again.

We chatted for a long time before the show w/ Charlie Louvin, Tim (another forum member – he came down from Massachusetts & had just seen all 5 shows in LA), & Tim’s Mom from Florida on the street corner by the Alabama Theater. Mr. Louvin is a wonderful, down-to-Earth, gracious man. We really enjoyed the time spent with him. After the show, we were pretty tired being one hour behind our home time in Atlanta, so we did not hang out long enough to see Lucinda or Doug & the band. Speaking of the band, they were fantastic. Lucinda even mentioned that they were on an “upward trend” musically, and she was right. They blew me away.

Finally, they were indeed selling the CDs from the LA shows in the lobby & I picked up a full set ($80 for 5 CDs). I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were packaged nicely – Lost Highway digipak style cases, professionally printed and all. They look like true commercial releases.

P.S. I got some pics of the show I will post up a link to after we get home & I get a chance to go through them…

Just to add a couple of additional notes, with all due respect. Unsuffer Me was the last song of the regualr set. The show did start late at 930, but there was no 11:00 curfew, hence the rather lengthy “discussion with Charlie” intro to Get Right With God, which ended at 11:45. Actually there was a curfew but it was midnight and didn’t come in to play. Just for the record.

Sorry ’bout that, IJ…I was going by what the owner of the venue was saying, re the curfew. I wondered about it myself, as there hasn’t seemed to be one at 11:00 with the other acts I’ve seen at the Alabama. Her show was fabulous, and if I were independently wealthy, I seriously might become a Lu-head and follow her! I’m so glad she’s out there representing us women as a strong, independent force, both with her songwriting, and in the way she lives her life.

During “Joy/Riders…” I thought I heard a few bars of “Mississippi Queen” – right before they broke into “Riders on the Storm”. Anyone else?

Amazing show, performer(s), band and venue. I really enjoyed hearing all the old songs as well. Thanks to Lucinda and Co. for coming to town!

I heard something, too, but I was sure it was a Led Zeppelin riff, although I could not put my finger on the exact song. “The Ocean” maybe?

I was going to ask Doug about it after the show (assuming I had the opportunity to chat with him) but, as I stated before, Sarah & I were too wiped out to hang around.

Maybe “Inside Job” can shed some light on this one for us… 😉

I read somewhere that they played a bit of “Heartbreaker” (at a different show) during Joy . I’m not a big Led Zeppelin listener, so…

Mary Colurso made out like the lyric binder is a new thing. I happen to disagree with her definition of “flaws” in Lucinda’s performance or in her stage attire. I don’t think people were distracted by her lyric binder, her outfit, or the 2 times she had to restart songs. Actually, I’d call it one and a tenth, since she realized her capo was in the wrong place right about 2 bars in. The whole tone of the “What made Lucinda do this or that” really got under my skin, even though she did have positive things to say about the performance.

That’s it!! That’s definitely what it was!

You’re right! Actually, all those things are vintage Lucinda. Every time I have seen her, she has the binder. She even refers to it on one of the LA show CDs as her “Linus blanket”. 😉

Attire? OMG, I thought she looked great. Of course, I’ve always been partially to ladies in jeans & t-shirts as opposed to an evening gown… 😀

And finally, the restarts are always part of her shows – that is one of the things that makes Lucinda so endearing. When ever she has one it makes me grin from ear to ear. She herself often admits she is an “obsessive-compulsive f-ing perfectionist”, and I give her tons of credit for restarting a song when she thnks it is not going just right as opposed to muddling through it. Besides, we get to hear more music that way…

OK, my pictures from the Birmingham show are up. Here are links:

Several of the pics are a little blury. I set my camera to no flash – as a consequence, the shutter speed was a bit slow despite using a high ISO. I hope y’all enjoy them nonetheless.

In Greensboro last night Pettibone definitely played a few bars of Zeppelin’s Heartbreaker during “Joy,” before they morphed into Riders On The Storm.
