21. BlessedThe Birchmere is an interesting venue with some unique policies:
All tickets are will-call.
At 5 PM, the box office opens, and issues sequential number slips to the will-call customers. If they wish, patrons can then enter a large open room with a bar, which is not the performance room. They can sit, drink, and eat, as they wish until 6 PM.
At 6 PM, the manager calls the sequential numbers, and each person or group enters the performance room, and is allowed to find seating. All entry is seated (no standing room), and all seating is at large rectangular tables with 6 chairs, meaning some shared tables with new acquaintances. Some tables are perpendicular to the stage–other tables are parallel to the stage.
Between 6 and 7:30, the wait-staff fills drink and food orders in a very noisy environment, typical for a large restaurant.
At 7:30, the PA system announces the show will start, and everyone must remain quiet and seated for the show. The audience becomes absolutely still and quiet, and the show commences. The wait staff continue with very quiet, discrete service, if necessary. I was very pleased and amazed that this procedure works–the room was strictly quiet for the entire show. The question in this procedure is what time to arrive for the 5 PM number distribution. I arrived about 4:55, and found about 200 people in line. I guess 4:30 would have been a better choice. I still managed to get a good seat, but adjacent to the side of the stage, which meant a side view of Doug and Lucinda–but very close to the action. Of course, I expect that tomorrow folks will adjust their arrival times to gain more advantage.

regarding arrival – If you want a choice seat (nearly all the seats are good and a great sound system fills the corners of the room), it depends on how many people are in your party. If you have six or eight people you want to hold seats for, you need to be in line by three thirty at the very latest. If its just two of you you can arrive later and still score great seats. I arrived at 4:40 today, I held ticket number number thirty-nine in line (several groups in front of me had six or more people) and I still scored great seats dead center, second table back from stage.
Anyone attending tuesday’s show is in for what will likely be the best DC-area show of the year. Tonight’s show certainly was.August 14, 2012 at 1:15 pm #50350tonygKeymasterGreat report ree ree!

You might test the policy with a little dancin’ near the end of the main set, if you can squeeze geometrically between those parallel/perpendicular tables at just the right angle. Here’s wondering how much the set list can and will possibly be varied tonight, since a lot of the classic, relatively slow ones were in there last night. . . .
