I’m jealous. Sounds like another great show. I think you guys nailed it when you said that Doug & Lucinda together is something really special. Sound like a great venue. Great report. Musiclover
June 30, 2012 at 10:00 pm #49986tonygKeymasterI made it home alive. It was a great show in a great setting. We ate at this place up the road from the library that overlooked the ocean. Tasty food and expensive wine. We went to the library and were seated at the back at a table overlooking the entire scene. Great view of the stage set on a lawn in the woods with cool lighting and lots of woodsy types in chairs and on blankets. Lucy Wainright opened at 7:15 and played a short whimsical set. Lu and Doug hit the stage at 8:25 and right away we got a winner with Side of The Road. Lu and Doug stood all night, facing each other. Doug wailed away while Lu rocked back and forth playing her guitar with enthusiasm. In duo form, you can really hear Lu’s guitar playing which is underrated in my opinion. Everyone was in great spirits: the terrific library volunteers, the crowd, and Lu and Doug and the crew. The music was super and the vibe was great. The library staff were pumped up about the show.
The 2 new songs were ballads, never before played if I remember correctly. I would have to hear them a few more times before describing them fully. Other than the problems with Crescent City, which just did not want to be played, the night was perfect. The show ended at 10:15.
The combination of great music, excellent setting, and great vibe puts this in my top ten list of shows.
It was great to see GrumpyMama, Etienne, Paul from Los Angeles, Doug, Tom, Lu, and Eric. Stoger, more than one person asked me where you were. Prepare to explain.
I should mention a funny scene at the end of the night. When Lu was walking through the almost empty lawn to go back to her bus and head out, the remaining stragglers, most of whom were the library staff and volunteers, we saying good night to her, as was the owners dog. Lu got very excited, waved to everyone and yelled thanks, threw her arms up the air, and blew everyone kisses. She was having fun.

July 1, 2012 at 12:38 pm #49991LWjettaParticipantThanks for all the great reports from Big Sur. I’ve been on the Friendly Forum for almost 4 years now and I can’t recall such comprehensive reporting for a Lu gig.
This one has it all from outstanding photography of the environs, Lu’s “small” song book to 16 DVD quality videos complete with her on stage banter.
Simply awesome reporting folks.lwj
July 1, 2012 at 6:39 pm #49992West WordsParticipant1) Love the new songs
2) ‘Bitter Memory’ sounds like it will be a fun boot-scooter with the full band rocking it up
3) I hope Doug stays in the band foreverJuly 2, 2012 at 1:28 pm #49993LeftyParticipant@LWjetta wrote:

July 2, 2012 at 2:37 pm #49994tonygKeymasterThx all. I hope someone went to the Kate Wolf show. 😀
July 2, 2012 at 5:54 pm #49995stogerParticipantThanks, Tony, and others. Let’s hope paulinlosangeles was counted among those in “good spirits.” Sounds like it.
Ballads indeed. Despite the false start, “When I Look at the World” was lovely. Did anybody catch the word at the end of the phrase “I’ve been a total ___” near the beginning of the song? Sounds like “rat” (!) but I couldn’t tell for sure from youtube. That glory/story business is a great gospelish hook in the chorus.
“Boot scooter” indeed, west words, that “Bitter Memory.” Doug’s countrified break was mighty fine as is, sans rhythm section. “Lonesome sound” to be sure. Was the guy really decked out in green, or was that a mirage from the blog post photos?
Here’s hoping for these two + “Stowaway in Your Heart” in Redding and beyond, full band. To repeat the estimable tonyg’s question, did anyone go to the Wolf festival?
July 2, 2012 at 6:14 pm #49996tonygKeymasterPaul was practically giddy.
How does one get to Redding, Stoger? Stagecoach? Even from my place it looks impenetrable.
That word cost $5.00.

There’s an 11 p.m. overnight Greyhound out of downtown LA next Tuesday which gets you to Redding late morn of the show, with about 8 hours to spare before doors. Rough it man, rough it.
