I have a bootleg Rolling Stones album from around 1974, I think it was a concert in Munich. It has got the definitive version of You Can’t Always Get What You Want. I’ve got it on cassette and gave the vinyl version to a friend since I don’t have a turntable anymore. It’s better than their live albums, all of which I love.
I just got the NY set of Lu’s “album shows” and love it. I also love At the Fillmore.
One I haven’t seen mentioned–> Warren Zevon-Stand in the Fire
If you ever thought Werewolves of London was a “novelty” song, you won’t anymore.October 29, 2009 at 4:15 pm #35114TimParticipantGet Yer Ya-Ya’s Out reissue:

Lu’s “Live at the Fillmore”….whoever picked the sequence of the songs is an absolute genius. Putting the tears-in-your-beers songs first really works for me.

Although I wouldn’t call it the “best” live album, I really like Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes – Live At The Greek – although All Music (the site I linked to) gave it only 3 stars… 😉

I LOVE Etta James – I’m going to go order this right now just based on your enthusiastic recommendation, eastside_eddie… 😉

UPDATE: Just ordered it on CD for $9.89 from Amazon. Then I went & checked the review at allmusic.com. Looks like you are definitely “on to something” about this one, eastside_eddie. They give it a full 5 our of 5 stars and say,
Simply one of the greatest live blues albums ever captured on tape. Cut in 1963 at the New Era Club in Nashville, the set finds Etta James in stellar shape as she forcefully delivers her own “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” and “Seven Day Fool” interspersed with a diet of sizzling covers (“What’d I Say,” “Sweet Little Angel,” “Money,” “Ooh Poo Pah Doo”). The CD incarnation adds three more great titles, including an impassioned reprise of her “All I Could Do Was Cry.” Guitarist David T. Walker is outstanding whenever he solos.
I can’t wait to get this – thanks for the recommendation!
March 18, 2011 at 10:31 pm #35119eastside_eddieParticipantOkay, I didn’t mention this BUT, look at the photos. *Ed grabs his scratchy CD* Etta proudly sports an Ace bandage on her wrist. The clock reads 2:10. The crowd is smoking and appears rather well-lubricated (she uses them as back-up singers all night). The suit at stage-left appears very bored and obsessed with his note pad. A seemingly 12-year-old and someday famous David Walker plays a juicy-to-the-bone Fender Jag. Vonzell Cooper plays an out of tune piano. And then there’s the music. Look at the writing credits. She covers almost everybody. Yup, #1 desert island disc. By the way, I’m usually not much of an Etta fan. Aretha can sing me to sleep any night. Also, for the truly obsessed, there are a few more tracks in a box set I have.

That way I can try before I buy. This has had a karmic payoff since I bought my needing county’s library a ton of blues cd’s. I think I got the better of the deal since I learned about so many great artists.
Worth the price of admission:

The most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard? Maybe….
Stick around for “Poor Lazurus” if you can.Lavern Sings Bessie

OMG! One of my favorite singers covering one of my favorite singers!April 9, 2011 at 6:39 pm #35124stevarinoParticipantLots of great mentions here, I agree with and have many. Will have to check out a few recomended here. But I’m surprised Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young; 4 Way Street wasn’t mentioned yet. Recorded live at Filmore East, 1970 among other venues. Did I miss it?
April 11, 2011 at 3:52 pm #35125TimParticipantThat was another classic, stevarino!

been listening to Bongo Fury lately,
Capt Beefheart and Frank Zappa with the Mothers.
