I saw the Lucinda Williams show in Knoxville, Tennessee, on September 26. Not sure whether I’m just in the minority and like to hear the words to songs and not have my ears hurt, but the band was WAY TOO LOUD. I actually got up and moved to the rear of the theater although it was still pretty bad back there. Maybe the sound problem was because the show was originally set for a much larger theater and, I assume because of lack of ticket sales, it was moved to a much smaller venue and someone forgot to tone things down? In any event it turned me off and I’ll not be going to another Lucinda Williams concert unless somehow I’m assured I will be able to hear the words to her songs (as on cd’s where she’s got a beautiful voice, but you wouldn’t have known that if you were at most of the Knoxville concert) without the band totally overriding her voice and even more hurting my ears.

We were about 5 rows back in New Haven last night and the sound
was perfect. Loud enough so you knew you were at a concert, but not so
loud your ears rang after the show. Like you said, maybe they were not
set up for a smaller place,or something else was going on, but generally
the sound quality at Lu shows is great.

All together now – If it’s too loud, you’re too old! 😈

my friend and i were 4th row in knoxville. we were off to the left side, right in front of the huge speakers and we both agree that it was not loud at all. many times i have left a concert where i cant hear anything for an hour afterwards and neither of us had any trouble after this one. oh well, i guess thats just the perks of being in our 20s lol.

Saw Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr & Built to Spill two Fridays ago in NYC, glad I had my Skull Screws with me.
Never thought of Lucinda & the guys being loud, but pain is in the ears of the beholder.

That’s a pretty rad lineup, Lefty.

It was an excellent show, tony, but #%@&!, it was LOUD!
I was definitely playing the grampa role that night 😆
Don’t forget, you need to provide a report on Neil when you see him…end of this month?

October 30. A full report will be provided.

I am going to see Hayes Carll and opening act The Dedringers on October 16 at The Mint in L.A. I may remark on that as well.

I was in the second row for that show and have to agree, the sound was great. I had a slight concern that it might get too loud, but it never did. Lu and the band kicked some butt! I’ve been lucky enough to see her three times and this show was the best I’ve seen.

My 47 year old factory noise damaged ears sometimes don’t like how loud the music is so I always bring those little yellow foam things to cram into my ears. Then its never too loud. Can’t wait to see next Wednesdays show in Columbus. I’m excited about seeing Buick Six for the first time. I Hope they play Niel Youngs Cinnamon Girl.

I always find Lucinda’s sound system to be top notch, certainly among the best I’ve heard (I’d put the Cowboy Junkies rig up there as well). Of course, I like loud music, but in the right room Lu always sounds clean. I dragged my wife to one of her shows a couple years back, 4th or 5th row…she is not a loud music fan, and I think she only resorted to her earplugs for one or two songs.
