I’d like to try a little friendly competition.

Every couple of weeks, I’ll post a different Lucinda album. I’m asking all who want to participate to choose their favorite track from the particular Lucinda album.

The two songs with the most votes will advance to the next round of competition. When the competition is resolved, we should end up with the definitive Lucinda track.

I’m trusting all of you to vote only once. Of course comments about the merits of your particular song choice are always welcome.

We’ll go in chronological order, so if I’m not mistaken, the first album up for voting is “Ramblin.”

Please post your favorite song from the following.

    1. Ramblin’ On My Mind
    2. Me and My Chauffer
    3. Motherless Children
    4. Malted Milk Blues
    5. Disgusted
    6. Jug Band Music
    7. Stop Breakin’ down
    8. Drop Down Daddy
    9. Little Darling Pal of Mine
    10. Make Me Down a Pallet On Your Floor
    11. Jambalaya
    12. Great Speckled Bird
    13. You’re Gonna Need That Pure Religion
    14. Satisfied Mind

    Thanks to all who participate.

Stan, I haven’t listened to “Ramblin” in a long time. Give me a week and I will vote.

No problem, Tony….this is just for fun, no rush. I need to go back and listen to it, too.

ditto, I’m in. Sounds like fun, plus it will bring some life to this board as we wait for the tour to begin.

I’m interested to see everyone’s favorite songs.
For me, on this album it’s Satisfied Mind. Love the wisdom and raw acheyness dripping from her voice.

Good choice. I was always a big fan of the Byrds, and a spin off of the Byrds was a band by the name of The Flying Burrito Brothers.

The Burritos did a great version of “Satisfied Mind,” in fact, that’s probably where I first heard the song.

I’ll listen to ‘Ramblin’ this week, and make a decision.

her version of “jambalya” has stayed with me as a sentimental favorite. So that’s my pick for this early album. This record is kind of atypical though, and i know it’s gonna be impossible for me to pick one with the other albums — favorites are always changing, and I always have multiple favorites so how can I say a single one is best! I had the same difficulty trying to answer ripley’s “rank and rate them” post last year — just couldn’t do it. Lucinda’s songs cover so much territory (musical and emotional) I don’t know if there can be a “definitive” song — but this is a testament to Lucinda’s talent, really. This thread will be fun to watch. 🙂

I think there’s some way to create a poll that tabulates votes. Of course, as “THE MODERATOR,” I have no freakin’ idea how to do that! 😉
I’ll try e-mailing the mysterious web wizard (not IJ) who pulls the strings here…

I think I have it narrowed down to “Me and My Chauffer, Motherless Children, Drop Down Daddy and Satisfied Mind?”

I have to admit…those songs where Lucinda goes into that brief falsetto always grab me.

We actually did this same experiment on a Kinks board years ago.

Just for everyone’s information, the definitive Kinks song, or however one wants to describe it, turned out to be “Waterloo Sunset.”

I had no complaints about that song winning the competition.

I did hear back from K. the Wizard. He’s swamped with work at the moment, but thought he could address the matter of setting up a poll(s) next week.

Well, I count 8 Lucinda albums, not counting the live material…

” 1. Ramblin, 2. Happy women blues, 3. Lucinda Williams, 4. Sweet Old World, 5. Car Wheels, 6. Essence, 7. World Without Tears, and 8. West.”

If we advance two songs from each CD to the next round, this leaves the perfect format…16 songs, after which I was randomly going to pit 2 songs against eachother….the winner advancing to the round of 8…etc.

Eventually this would leave us with the favorite Lucinda track of all time…at least based on the voters in this forum.

If we want to make this a poll, that’s fine…I didn’t expect a ton of votes on “Ramblin” as this may not be as familiar to the casual listener as some of Ms. Williams later work?

At any rate, for coming up with this idea, I expect to be sent a password to allow me to buy Lu tickets early when she next comes to the Pageant in St. Louis, and a back stage pass would be nice, or even better, allowing my band to open up for her…Haha LOL!

As far as this vote, I’m voting for “Me and My Chauffer.” There’s just something about Ms.Williams voice…the song makes me laugh, and it has a great guitar break in the middle.

This could be one of those CD’s where whichever song gets 2 votes advances, because so far I believe we have one vote for about 4 different songs?

I expect the voting and comments to pick up when we get into more familiar territory.

I’m not going to participate in an album by album thing. I’ll just say that of all the great songs that Lucinda Williams has written, my favorites are:
    1. Blue
    2. Sweet Old World
    3. Essence
    4. Pineola
    5. Greenville

Tim, how many times have you seen her perform any of those songs?

Tony; “Blue” only twice. “Sweet Old World” once. “Essence” maybe eight.
“Pineola” six. “Greenville” three times. I think that the versions of “Blue” & “Essence” on Live At The Fillmore are fantastic. She’s written so many great songs that she can’t do nearly all of them. That’s the only thing about the new records that come out; she’s obviously promoting them and doing quite a few of those songs, but there’s less room for her older great ones. Hopefully the new one will have a few more great songs on it. But if she does say, six from that album, and three or four from “West”, that doesn’t leave much room for older material.
I think the “Essence” album was highly underrated! It’s filled with great songs, and I think they sound even better live.

First listen in awhile… Me and My Chauffer and Jug Band Music(believe it or not). Then I thought, Jambalaya and Great Speckled Bird are classics in my book. But in the end, Satisfied Mind wins out. BRING ON THE TOUR AND NEW ALBUM.
