What I would like Lucinda to know, if she reads this forum, is:
I have enjoyed every show I’ve been to (7) and feel honored to hear a new song played for the first time. Live music is about the vibe/energy just as much as the music, in terms of MY concert experience. There is Absolutely a margin for error. In fact, that makes me relate to the musician’s humanity and feel more connected. Part of what is great about Lucinda is her down-to earth quality and the songs (many of which feel like they are about the perfection of human imperfection) which NEVER fail to move me.It’s hard to watch someone be so damn hard on themselves, especially when they are bringing such a gift to a town where nobody ever plays.
After seeing the Saratoga show last week with an audience who was moving to the music, I may have an understanding why most good musical artists do not play here. The Sac crowd looked like they were watching a play. Maybe it was the lack of air???
Having said that, it was another great Lu show, from my perspective. The new songs were great. (Some good old(er) ones too) The band sounded excellent. Lucinda is amazing and I can’t wait for the new album.

To many people want to hear the same old songs every time they see a musician play and don’t allow themselves to really listen to the new songs. The 7 songs she did from her new album were all different and included funny songs like Jailhouse Tears and some very serious ones and a lot that were in between, in other words another great Lucinda “Album”. I saw Lucinda open for John Mellencamp in Berkeley about 1 month ago and her set was almost entirely different than that show and that is exactly what I was hoping for. She opened the show saying that some of her fans followed her up to Sac from LA and she wanted to make sure she didn’t do the same show and when I heard that I was stoked because I really wanted to hear some songs from the new album. Going to live shows allows fans to hear songs that no one else will hear until the album comes out and that is one of the things that make live shows so great. I know I am one sided when it comes to Lucinda but I believe this line of thought is the same for all musicians. I will be at the Fillmore show in November and whatever songs she plays will be fine with me and they are all great!

The show was excellent up until the meltdown, and although I agree she might have been too hard on herself, I’d have to add that she was pretty rude to Doug P., angrily scribbling notes in her huge cheat book and pointing them out to him. She fumed for the rest of the set (two more songs) after seeming to have such a good time earlier. All this after explaining that it was a new song they’d never played live. She had the crowd eating out of her hand and she flipped out.
In the area I was in, front of house left, everyone was bopping, and the crowd was raucous throughout. I think if it had been a play, we’d have been asked to leave or at least calm down.
As for no one ever plays here, I’ve seen great live music here over the last couple years of acts like John Prine, Richard Thompson, and Neil Young to name a few nobodies. Upcoming shows include Kris Kristofferson, Flogging Molly and Rage Against The Machine. Heck, even Neil Diamond 😉
Points I’m happy to agree with—excellent show overall, hot band, and new songs that make me very eager to get my hands on the new album.
I’ve seen Lucinda many times before, without the meltdown or the lyric book, and this was still one of the best shows by her I’ve seen.
September 5, 2008 at 10:50 pm #37115MaryParticipantwow! I missed neil young? where/when did he play sac? I’ve got to pay more attention, eh? I just know that i usually have to travel to hear/see live music from the artists I enjoy most. I’m not a big fan of Arena shows at this stage of the game.
I was front of house right, and while it seemed everyone enjoyed the show, the crowd felt pretty subdued compared to other Lu audiences I’ve been in. I’m happy to have had the opportunity to see someone I like so much in my own town, though. And like I said it was pretty tight in there with no air. Don’t get me wrong… I love the Crest theater and hope for more shows there.
I didn’t see the thing you mentioned about Doug P, but as I said, it is pretty hard to watch someone be so hard on themselves (and apparently others too?) I think she always has the lyric book. I think it’s the reason she is able to have variations in the set list (which is great if you see more than one show on a tour).
Glad you liked the show, for the most part : )
September 6, 2008 at 4:11 pm #37116illbeyouParticipanthrhbalzac – I haven’t seen anything regarding RATM coming to Sac. Where can I find more info?
September 7, 2008 at 1:37 am #37117hrhbalzacParticipantillbeyou i feel like a dope—I was slightly misinformed. It’s Richard Cheese and His Lounge Against The Machine band at Harlows 10/18. A bit of a step-down, eh?
Sorry for the false hopes.
