That’s a stretch in my opinion, Driver. I think the meaning of the song is much more straightforward.

I believe that Lucinda has said that “Little Rock Star” was inspired by an article she read in Rolling Stone about Pete Doherty.

    I know, I agree.

But somehow… a good song is a song that different people could connect to different things… If someone sings about a mansion on a hill… It doesn’t have to be a mansion on a hill for everybody, you know.

I like Driver’s interpretation. It doesn’t really work for me but I can see where he is coming from.

I once heard a Dylan quote that went something like, “I know what I meant when I wrote it. You know what it meant when you heard it. The true meaning is somewhere in the middle.” I think that applies.

Agreed, Philthy. Songs resonate differently for me as years go by, and they take on new shades of meaning as I learn more and experience more in life. I think the best songwriters know how to tap into the universality–sure, “Little Rock Star” may’ve been inspired by one of the crop of young, self-destructive rockers out there, but I can see it applying to any self-destructive person who has never grown up, whether they’re on a stage or working at a 7-11. That Dylan quote sums it up perfectly.

    Easy.

    I’m not Pete Doherty, I’m a dad…
