Yesterday was a treat. I left my humble home at 6 am, so that I could leave work early, change into my concert hipster outfit, and go to the show. I was puzzled why fire engines were racing up the highway as I drove to work in the dark. I soon found out why. The roads back home were closed all day so I went directly to the show in my office worker dweeb outfit. My concert companion advised me that no one cared what I looked like.
I slid into my seat at the Orpheum at the exact moment Lu and the fellers opened the show. Lu looked and sounded great. She was in peak story-telling form. Many of the stories were longer than the song. As a result, the first set had a certain start-stop quality to it. The second set had more of a flow to it. Halfway through the second set I had a revelation that I will share with you here in the friendly confines. Here it is: the louder Lu sings, the better she sounds. There it is. Do what you may with that. Doug joined the final songs and he and Stuart put on a twin guitar show that got the crowd hopping. Good times.
Bonus fun fact: Doug played Lu’s electric guitar through her amp. It’s true!
I was dismayed to not see any FF members, probably the first time ever, although I did feel their presence. Legendary OG Lu fanatic Gerald was in the house; his first show in 5 years he said. He first saw Lu in 1984! He wins! Always good to see Lu and Tom’s pals Peggy and Rob. The actor who played little Ernie on My Three Sons was there, looking exactly the same save for being 50 years older! Jenni Muldaur was in the house.
Have fun you Oakland peeps.
