I’m not the one to start this thread but I will. I hope others who encountered the man more recently will add.
As I couldn’t get to LA last weekend, I made a musical Nashville weekend. Sunday night, it was Chris Hillman at City Winery. As some know, Petty produced Hillman’s 2017 record Biding My Time; “Wildflowers” closes it, and Petty plays and sings on multiple tracks. Hillman must have evoked his name a half dozen times from the stage Sunday; whether or not TP was already in cardiac arrest I don’t know. “Tom played harmonica on this one” and “He couldn’t be her tonight, but . . .” were typical CH comments.
I’ve been listening to the She’s the ONe soundtrack, track five especially.

Tom was heavily influenced by the Birds, as a lot of his earlier music indicates that and I think he probably respects Roger Mcguinn and Chris Hallman as much as anyone. She’s the One is a really good album as well as Highway Companion.
My wife and I were at the Hollywood Bowl last Monday night. We traveled 5 hours and stayed the weekend to see the show; something that we would have did when we were younger, but a little out of character these days. We started dating in high school and for many years we would see Tom when toured in the area. It was the one musical artist that we both were really connected to. She liked and tolerated some of my favorites: Bruce, Steve Earle, more recently Lu, and some of the more obscure song writers, and I liked some of hers: Fleetwood Mac, Carole king, etc, but if there was a Tom Petty show in the area, we were there. I remember one show we rode 2-1/2 hours with four people squeezed into a 1970’s Datsun 240z with Tom Petty tunes blasting to and from the show. So we were there Monday night and for a couple of hours, it was sort of like we reconnected with the young(er) versions of our selves. I actually thought a couple of times throughout the show that this was “just like old times”. The band was tight, the show was energetic, the Webb Sisters added a subtle new dimension to some of the songs.
I was stoked to see Lucinda for the first time and she did not disappoint! “Foolishness” was a definitely a highlight along with Joy, Drunken Angle and Sweet Old World. I would love to see her in a smaller setting with more acoustic songs that show case her brilliant lyrics
As much as I have seen and listened to Tom through the years, I never considered him one of my favorite song writers. I always associate great song writers to the lyrics they wrote. But Tom wrote some pretty damn good songs. BTW, my personal favorite writers have always included Bruce, Bob, Townes, Guy and Merle. More recently (within the last 10 years) my favorites are Lucinda (which is why I am here) and Sam Baker (amazing writer). The last two I love to put on the head phones and just listen.
Anyway, it was our first Lucinda show and ended up being our last Tom Petty show; but what a hell of show it was.

In the midst of all the heartbreak from Monday, I’m also thinking of Lu and hope she is holding on given how personal the loss of Petty and the Vegas circumstances are for her. She is a sensitive soul and I’m thinking of her as well as so many others. On these days that feel like a piling on, I’m summoning my January 21st energy from Lu’s show that day at the Fillmore in SF. The room was full of love and purpose, while acknowledging the messy world we live in.
The loss of Petty is a hard one. When I was in fifth grade I was placed into foster care for a period of time. The makeshift basement room that I slept in had a small radio, and week after week during that time, I stayed up late on Sunday nights waiting to hear the #1 song on Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 Countdown, “Refugee.” I didn’t know what a refugee was, but I knew that I was one: “kidnapped, tied up, taken away, and held for ransom…” I couldn’t have articulated it at the time, but that song made me realize that lyrics have meaning and that music was something like alchemy, creating… Understanding? Strength? A lonely community? I never made it through hearing Petty perform that song live without crying and being healed a tiny bit. It just hit me hard that I’ll never have that experience again.

Easiest confession I’ve ever endured. Ha, not to get too off topic, but I will…I remember as a child making stuff up when I went into the confessional. I felt like I never had enough to confess. <insert angel emoji> 😆
I had a default list of menial sins that I swapped out here and there. Like I was going to admit to my real sins like murdering people and being the devil.

Well said Vivian. I have also been thinking of Lu and how she’s holding up during the loss and tragedy. Those shows at the Fillmore in Jan. were very healing and comforting for me as well.
Looking forward to seeing her at the festival this weekend.

I used to make up sins on a regular basis in the confessional primarily to stay out of class longer as the nun’s would take us during school. The last kid at the alter saying my Hail Mary’s? That was nearly always me.
