Am I the only one who thinks Matt Blake’s voice favors the late Vic Chesnutt?

    Mike, take it away. . . .

What a great show and a great night!!

Bellingham’s official city motto is “The City of Subdued Excitement”.. and my concern was the hometown crowd’s excitement for Lu would remain subdued throughout the whole show.. Not the case.. Lu and the band had the crowd standing and rocking in the aisles giving the previous night’s fantastic Olympia crowd a run for it’s money.

Great setlist… loved hearing a few that I’ve not heard or at least not for a while.. Metal Firecracker, Burning Bridges and a great solo version of Walk On.. Also really enjoyed hearing the Clash’s Should I Stay or Should I Go.. Great encore song.. some in the crowd headed for the exit early and came rushing back for the final anthem Rockin’ in the Free World.

A special treat on what was my wife, Michelle and I’s anniversary celebration concert was being able to go backstage afterwards and meet Lu , Tom and the band.. I’ve said hello a few times before but this ended up being a really nice visit.. So gracious and down to earth, what a nice surprise to be able to do (thanks again Roger).. And what a fantastic way to end the night on Lu’s first (and hopefully not last) visit to Bellingham.

    From Tom:
After the endless drive to Olympia it was great to have a nice short JUMP to Bellingham, so bus time was minimized. Had a great quiet day to catch our breath. Can’t believe we haven’t played Bellingham before. Beautiful city, beautiful theatre.
Knowing that some people were coming to this after being in Olympia and Seattle, we mixed up the setlist from both of those shows. We got Burning Bridges back in for the first time in several shows, as well as Those 3 Days, Fruits of My Labor and Out Of Touch, with Lu was just thrilled with after the show -as she put it “Stuart absolutely rocked on the ending”. After lowering the key a half step she was also very happy with Fruits Of My Labor- that’s a favorite of a lot of us and it worked really well going into Are You Down. We need to keep that one in the set more -but we say that about a lot of songs —there are so many that that we are trying to work in. Walk On was also added to the solo section -I believe that is only the third or fourth time it has been played, but we’ve been wanting to get that one in. It’s going to be in the new Meryl Streep movie Ricki And The Flash and it will be the next single from DWTSMTB and it sounded really great.
So we get on the bus to head to the border and Red (the driver) gets on ready to roll with his Fred Sanford groove on (I mean this lovingly) he’s still got the red outfit going on except that tonight he’s sporting a red and black Ghostface Killah t-shirt. Now, I love that Red/Fred is throwing down for the Killah, but let’s just say that after the some of the recent border crossings we’ve had it might not have been the obvious choice of attire. Now this is no knock at all on GK* but just sayin’, between laughs we are really hoping the border guards are Ghostaface Killah fans.
You gotta love it. We should be recording this. Thanks again Bellingham. On to the border.

*After the sensitivity in the previous travelblogue about rural Tennessee, it is probably best to offer a the disclaimer now and say that I hope this does not offend our friends and fans of hip-hop -it was just really funny at the time.

Ha ha rural Tennessee rocks, my friend. Perhaps you and Lu will settle there, as you can still be quite close to Nash and boast a house-yard with plenty of acreage for old buses out in the nearby country a bit.

I have never liked Redd Foxx or Fred Sanford much, for the record. . . .

Just noticed Tom posted the pic he took of my Lu Tattoo on FB…
She seemed to genuinely like it.. Nice.

I wish more selfies confined themselves to the lower extremities of the body, Mike. Thanks.
