Even though Lu said at one point, “what happens at the Zoo stays at the Zoo,” I take the liberty of. . .
1 Something Wicked
2 Real Live Bleeding
3 Right in Time
4 Drunken Angel [Lu reviews the weather patterns in the Midwest for the past few days, entertainingly]
5 West Memphis
6 Everything but the Truth [with much Lone Ranger lore in front of it]
7 When I Look at the World
8 Compassion
9 In the Pines {Leadbelly reprise, featuring “black girl, black girl” as protagonist: at the end of it, Lu surveys the history of murder ballads and circles around to a long-ago Crook & Chase Nashville TV appearance where a producer had to override the hosts’ decision not to let her play “Pineola” on air]
10 Lake Charles
11 Are You Alright
12 Are You Down [with lavish praise of Buick 6, which has cut an instrumental version of “Righteously”: Lu reveals she sings on their version of the Marley cover]
13 Protection
14 Little Rock Star
15 Unsuffer Me
16 Essence
17 Righteously {Lu breaks off mid-song to note the “insane bugs” milling about the stage: some insect repellent is brought on stage, and the portable fan is repositioned. Other comments include “at least they’re not mosquitoes” and “I guess this builds character.” By the end of the song, she is telling us about her Louisiana grandmother in a housedress fending off cockroaches]
18 Honeybee

19 Have Love Will Travel (Sonics}
20 The Rising (Bruce)
21 Get Right with GodAh, MN Zoo, where I was met at gate by an early-teen-something with a clutch of green wristbands who demanded to know whether I would be drinking and proceeded to card me. Where my first drink order was given to a late-teen-something and produced 7-8 minutes later by a mid-teen-something. Where concession stand one took credit cards but had no wine, and concession area two served good wine but took no plastic. Where anyone looking over 22 would have no chance of being hired as a food vendor. And let’s not even go into the umbrella policy. Don’t think just because yours is tiny and fits into the back pocket of your jeans that it won’t be found out by some point by a [usually geriatric] usher or volunteer, even if you stick it under your seat during intermission. Don’t think because the seats are tiered that you will be not be accused of potential capability of obstructing your neighbors’ view upon the least sprinkle or drizzle (it did precipitate briefly during Buick 6).
Other than that, a fine time was had by me/all.
Matt Blake played two with Buick 6, who were introduced by a tape recorded voice in French. I figure it was the bilingual spouse of Butch Norton.
Good to see my Midwestern friends after, one sporting a Neil Young t-shirt.
On to Iowa City, UNESCO-designated “City of Literature.”

Enjoy Iowa…
Last time I saw Lu in Iowa was a very memorable show in Council Bluffs..Lu and the band should have plenty of time to work the bugs out before tomorrows show..

(drive safe..tip your waitress)Memorable? Council Bluffs? Were a portable electric fan and a common four-letter Anglo-Saxon expletive involved?
Safely north-northeast of there today, Mike. . .

First it was rain, then hail and tornado warnings and tonight it was bugs. Early June night in Minny brought all the flying insect categories —although it didn’t seem like the skeeters had hatched yet. Nevertheless another packed house in Minneapolis and Lu and the band were very on and very happy with the show. Some great tour debuts with Lu doing a beautiful solo version Lead Belly’s In The Pines. It also the first try at that Bruce guy’s The Rising. That one is going to get better and better.
I think that makes 83 songs YTD ?
