Last night I returned to “the scene of the crime,” the venue Lu christened even before it officially opened, Nash’s City Winery. With no opening act and no setbreak, Shelby Lynne performed her new record in sequence (save one track) and pretty much all of 2000’s I Am Shelby Lynne, plus a few strays. She flubbed lyrics on my favorite song (“Why Can’t You Be”), but hey, we’ve encountered that even from her betters. Unfortunately she reported that Tony Joe White, whom I half expected to sit in, was in ill health.
Ron Sexsmith co-wrote two of the songs on her new one: Ah Canada!!!!!!
Shelby’s sister is booked in there later in the summer, also The Richard Thompson Electric Trio (featuring Taras Produniak). I have to retract most of what I said in that Sept. 2013 post about this joint. “The Night’s Too Long” being on the house soundtrack last night didn’t hurt.
