Thanks for the timely post, Paul!

What a great venue to really hear the music in.
Would love to have caught the solo version of “Walk On”..

Have a great time on night 2 (if you’re attending)..

An intimate show for about 150 fortunate ticket-holders, seated in McCabe’s backroom.

The Kenneth Brian Band opened in their lite configuration: no bass, no drums, and no Lillie Mae. Kenneth and Travis played mellow electric guitars, while Frank played acoustic guitar, instead of bass.

On the small stage, Butch’s drums were wedged into an angled corner at the side front of the stage. With Stuart’s equipment blocking a safe access to the drums, Butch reached his drums by walking through the audience seats, and climbing to the front of the stage, using an improvised box as a step.

From this forum, I observed the Webmasta, seated with a few VIP’s, whom I did not know.

Peggy French was busy, snapping some unobtrusive photos. A photo of the stage, with Butch’s corner, appears this morning on Peggy’s Facebook page, PeggyFrenchPhotography.

    Hey Paul,

It was really nice to see you at the show and Thanks for posting this set list. I logged on today to see if I could find the set list just so I could remind myself of how great last night was as I enjoy my morning coffee.

I have to say, my wife and I were on the fence about coming to this show. Simply because the amount of chairs McCabes crams in to accommodate the seating makes it hard to get in and out of the rows and your knees are practically in the butt of the person in front of you. Jen and I called it the Sardine effect, but in the end with sore butts and all we were really grateful to have been there and to have seen the show.

McCabes is a Los Angeles institution for musicians on the west side and the promoter of this show was really accommodating. But what really put things in perspective for me last night was when Lucinda pointed out how it was 30 years ago that she first performed at McCabes. I have seen many of my favorite singer song writers at McCabes, like Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom. The back room of McCabe’s is one of those off the beaten path venues that puts on Magic in a low key kind of way. Last night was one of those nights.

Lucinda was running just a bit behind schedule and the crowd at McCabes politely started to Clap. It was one those times when a collective croup communicated that it no longer wanted to wait for one its favorite artists. And magically Lucinda immediately came down the stairs from the upstairs green room and clapping turned to applause and then ended in a room dead silent. Lucinda made a comment inviting people to say things and because it was so quiet it made her nervous. Which of course drew laughter and resulted in people sharing random shouts of gratitude.

Another interesting thing that lucinda commented on between the songs was how, despite the stage being so small, people have asked her, “how she manages to get a full band on the small McCabe’s stage”. I’m paraphrasing here, but she replied “…we make it work, McCabe’s is about creativity”.

This comment was so dead on and special because of the back room of McCabe’s really is meant for open mic nights and singer songwriters performances while the shop is about providing the tools for creativity.

McCabe’s is one of those guitar shops that really knows how to pick and stock great music books and beautifully made hand crafted accoustic instruments. I have so many memories of going to McCabe’s when I first moved to LA and playing an acoustic I just couldn’t afford, but in the end of walking out with a music book that I love or going there to meet a good friend and talk about a music project. The smell of the shop reminds me of a cross between the inside of my pre-WWII Gibson acoustic and my grandmas attic. One of those smells that fills you with fond memories and comfort like an log cabin.

Now for my comments on the nights performances and music. Rather than do a play by play of the songs what Jen I left with last night was how great Lucinda’s voice sounded, how wonderful her band is right now. Despite Lucinda’s having a cough and seeming to need water & tea early in the set, her voice delivered her signature melodies. The sound was perfectly balanced over her guitar and band. The solo acoustic songs and the band playing down to the rooms required dynamics gave more room for her lyrics to be understood and appreciated.

Another thing that was so amazing last night was how Stuart playing has settled into the band. Stuart is one of those rare guitar player musicians who is so clearly in command of his playing he can fit in not only with Lucinda’s arrangement but the also the bands dynamics. I can only imagine what a joy it is for Butch and David to hear a guitar player playing WITH them so perfectly. I love Stuarts phrasing and his improv as much as his ability to capture the guitar arrangements that other’s created. But what I love the most about Stuarts playing is the soft between notes and how he ends his solo runs and settles back into a verse and arrangement. Its like watching someone land a plane on a golf course. Nothing short of musically amazing. I may have this wrong but I’ve only caught two shows on this leg of the tour but there is this jam that happens I think in Joy what is musically genius. It starts out as this Jazz fusion like guitar solo with amazing acrobatic licks that are as tasteful as they are impressive but what becomes obvious is how Butch and David seem to be driving the arrangement of the solo as much as Stuart is. It soon becomes obvious this is there musicians fully supporting each other and the jam goes to these amazing places influenced by latin rhythms as much as it is Jazz.

Thing is, I then realized I had seen this at the show I saw downtown LA in a mid sized theater and it was rocking just the same. The room loved it and when Lucinda finally returned to the mic she was beaming with pride that she had such an amazing band.

I really hope I can sneak out and see tonight McCabes show again.

One more comment I’d like to make about Stuarts playing last night… (sorry the memories of the evening keep flooding in)…
Two skills that Stuart has, that I am really impressed with, are 1) his slide playing and 2) his harmonica playing.

I really love how Stuart incorporates Lucinda’s vocal melodies into his solos and chord arrangements.
Seeing Stuart slip on slide and then play a solo with and without the slide, mixing up regular fingered playing with slide playing fluidly, all in a standard tuning is just magic.

What was more impressive to me, was seeing Stuart’s harmonica playing on Drunken Angel. It was like listening to the record. As soon as it was over, my wife turned to me and said “…that was perfect!”

I’m always amazing when someone puts on a harmonica holder and plays while playing guitar.
Must be the influence of the two Dylan’s on him… ๐Ÿ˜‰

I am so glad Stuart took the guitar gig with Lucinda’s band. He clearly has put great effort into fitting into Lucinda’s music. Knowing how well he, Butch and David play, makes one wonder what it would be like to see them as trio going nuts. They really are impressive musicians.

Good work, paul, webmasta too. A quintet of songs down the hatch before the Butchster even steps on the stage (and what a route)??? Let’s hope his California-based mother was not in this audience, dialing 911 or some AWOL line. I may have heard “Walk On” once (or perhaps zero). The same for “one More Day”–I should know for sure I guess. Paul had some influence on tune 6 being done, if I don’t miss my guess.

So thanks to all, and Godspeed on Mama’s injury and the aftermath. That was scary.

    From Tom:
Night one at cozy McCabes -always a different intimate show than anywhere else. Lu plays One More Day solo which is the first time that song has been played live. I think sheโ€™ll be doing that again. Eery song on the new record has now been played live at least once.
3 tour song debuts puts the running total for this tour at 73.
