Since the thread lafayette started re: this event was apparently a deleted one, I’ll reset.
At the former taping site of Austin City Limits on the UT campus, Lu was interviewed formally for about 20 minutes, then lobbed a few questions by the audience for another 10-15. She seemed relaxed, and the audience was politely sedate, almost but not quite filling the seats.
Some highlights: Lu revealed that she once was hired to perform at a Houston Steak and Ale franchise, playing solo and without a microphone.
Lu once opened for Ted Nugent, who, when asked his opinion of her set, allegedly replied, “She’s just another p _ _ _ y on a guitar.”
Three covers have been cut, though I’m not sure if these will be part of the next (2014) release. They are Lou Reed’s “Pale Blue Eyes”; Bruce Springsteen’s “Factory”; J.J. Cale’s “Magnolia.”
When pressed, Lu said yes, the record will come out in March or April and will be a double one. Greater wisdom might be summer 2014, but it’s a comin. Thirty-four tracks are in the bag, says Lu–though “Port Arthur” is not one of them in terms of last fall’s studio recordings. She implied she wanted to cut it again, with harmony part
.She was asked about “Greenville” but revealed little new, other than the figure was a–yes folks–male musician.
Tony Joe White, Greg Leisz, Bill Frissell, and Ian McLagan are on the new tracks, but not all on the same ones; they were in studio at different times. Apparently, Butch and David are on some but not all of the 34 tracks. Another rhythm section was used for part.
Lu said there was a “country-soul” thread on the material set for the double 2014 release. She implied that the remainder of the songs were more in the nature of ballads, and that the 3 covers fell more in that camp.
Lu admitted to a “fear of being overproduced” for a number of years.
She said the self-titled rerelease record exuded a “warmth” then and now, more so than other of hers maybe.

Just curious… does anyone know which “Greenville” the song refers to? North Carolina? South Carolina? Other?

Mississippi I believe, though I’d like to think it’s my home state’s Green[e]ville, birthplace of our illustrious 17th president.
