Sarah Borges [sans the Broken Singles]

I’ve been a fan, ever since Sarah played the Americana conference few years back and was joined by JOhn Doe on stage for the X cover “Come Back to Me” (which Sarah had put on her record). She was thrilled that he almost literally leapt on the stage of The Basement to duo.

Also, I have seen her in Milwaukee at that summer fest Lu played, probably even the same day as that pre-Mellencamp, non-soundcheck debacle.

But. There she is at a Cambridge MS club called The Plough & Stars last night, five buck cover, me on “business trip.” Once again, wardrobe pays. I ran into a chick who insisted that she once saw both Lu (almost certainly, yes) and me (well, maybe she did) on the grounds of the JazzFest, New Orleans. I won’t deny it. Before the night was out, Sarah B herself said to me, “nice shirt.” So here’s to the now defunct fan club and the late manager who made that shirtwear possible.

Sarah got “dumped” by the Sugar Hill label awhile back, so screw them there (though they did sign Kenny Vaughan). She also chose to dump her own band The Broken Singles (“those guys were always ten years older than me”). Last night she played “Daniel Lee” solo, the first song I ever heard of hers, on an Americana sampler. A couple of guys joined her toward end of set, producing an estimable “These Days” (though a bit shy of the Greg Allman mark: see Lu’s Starbucks ARtist Picks series). Sarah has a two-year-old and a wedding ring provided by an erstwhile Broken Single. Check out her stuff. Oh, she also said the Americana conference doesn’t want her back, though she applied last two years. I hope that’s not so. New record out soon, self-produced.
