I guess we can get this started. There are 4 artists listed to peform tonight: Etana, The Iguanas, Aaron Neville, and Lucinda Williams, the latter 2 being the headliners. The show starts at 5, in a parking lot across the street from the Staples Center, for some reason. I will be arriving with Etienne and Grumpymama. I predict we will see Paul from Los Angeles also. The forecast is for another scorching hot day. I hope to be there at 6 pm.

tonyg, thank you for mentioning me, but I do not expect to attend this event. I am not a big fan of paying to see one performer among a festival of other performers, especially with divergent music genres. Enjoy the warm evening…

    Looking forward to reports.

According to my sources *twitter* it looks like Lu opened the show with “Factory” by Bruuuuuuuce.

As a last minute fling, I took the Light Rail downtown to the Staples Center, just to get a glimpse and feel of the event. I walked/sat around Nokia Plaza and the Staples sidewalk from about 6:30, and I could hear all the music, and see part of the stage from across the street. Lucinda, as the 3rd act, began about 8:10.

As tonyg mentioned, Lucinda sang 8 songs:

    Factory
    Can’t Let Go
    I Lost It
    Drunken Angel
    Out Of Touch
    Hard Time Killin’ Floor Blues
    Righteously
    Joy

    (no encore)

Here is my report, after 5 hours sleep. It was mega hot, with a slight warm breeze, in downtown LA. We got there a little after 6 and had a drink and something to eat at the venue. Etana was on the stage, loud. The crowd outnumbered the white folding chairs by a lot. We gave up our 4th row seats and sat further in the back where it was empty, in the desperate hope of catching the odd breeze. The Iquanas came and went. Lu hit the stage at 8:15 and it was clear from the start that she was pumped up and ready to rock and roll. Also quite loud. She lost her place halfway through Righteously because, she said, she was “mesmerized” by Val’s guitar paying. Val was burning up the frets, and Butch and David were into it. This was a one night thing for Val. Show over at 9 pm.

I bumped into Cindy Wasserman before Lu’s set in the cocktail tent and she was very excited about seeing Lu as well. I was home at 2:30 and up at 7:30 to attend my golf lesson. I would have gotten home earlier if I didn’t get stopped for a speeding ticket one mile from my home. 😯

Well, not exactly a warm-up for the self-titled run, but good tunes nonetheless. I see Paul knows how to build an economical evening. As for the heat, we hit mid 90-s in west TN this week–equivalent? I take it Stuart Mathis will join the tribe in Oklahoma, Tony, according to what you said about Val. As for speeding tickets, I call that taking one for the team. Hope you birdied a few holes today.

About the same here Stoger, and strangely humid. Stuart Mathis going forward, I understand.

I badly mangled my audience/chair comparison. There were many more chairs than people. They were set up for a much bigger crowd but I think a lot of people had already left town for the holiday weekend. By the way, Aaron Neville was on after Lu and he sounded great. I did not catch his whole set but it seemed like he was killing it.
