I just found, in Second Ave. Records of Portland, a 33 1/3 RPM in a generic yellow packaging, “That Time of Night” by Lucinda Williams (1263A) on one side, the same song by Michael Chapman (1263B) on the other–certainly appropriate alphabetizaton/classification/ordering, if you ask me. Is Chapman that gospel/Christian rock guy? The store didn’t have a listing for his stuff. When i asked the clerk to have a listen before I bought, he replied (despite the presence of thousands of vinyl records and hundreds of vinyl bins in the store), “we don’t have a turntable.” So as I’m almost 24 hours away from getting back to my own dinky unit, can someone help me out with this release/listing? Of course, seventeen bucks wasn’t going to stop me from purchasing, didn’t. . . .

Don’t know his religious convictions, but Mr. Chapman is described as “a Cornish folk singer” in this short article from Paste magazine. The linked-to article also discusses the tribute album, Oh Michael, Look What You’ve Done: Friends Play Michael Chapman, that was released on May 29th of last year that features Lu’s cover of “That Time of Night”. The vinyl single you found was released in conjunction with Record Store Day last year. I see it come up for sale frequently on eBay. Also, J&R Music has it for sale for $14.39

Finally, perhaps you missed this earlier thread right here in our forum about this tribute album, complete with a post from yours truly quoting the lyrics for “That Time Of Night”? 😉

Just to confirm TT’s info -yes this is the same version of the song that Lu did on the Michael Chapman tribute cd. This was a special release done with Tompkins Square Records for Record Store Day.

You ask for a Tom’s help, you get Toms X 2 . . . Mea culpa guys; obviously, May 3, 2012 was a day I was actually working a job or reading a book or living my life or something, for I don’t recall reading the flurry of cybercorrespondence on that date–with many Forum friends and acquaintances involved! It all adds up. I tried playing the record on my hi-fi today, and I will need the Tracy-deciphered lyrics to help me through, since my audio quality is so poor. Anyway, how could I cross Michael Chapman with Stephen Curtis Chapman?!? The clerk himself (he of the vinyl shop sans turntable) speculated that Chapman was “a bluegrass artist,” so we both blew that one. By the way, there’s another copy of this curio in the bin between West and Blessed, so perhaps Mike can train it down from Seattle long enough to scoop it up for seventeen smackers. The joys of retail shopping–records not shoes in this case.

No “mea culpas” needed, Perfesser. I know you are busy shaping young minds and therefore cannot read everything on the forum, especially from wordy bastards with an embarrassment of free time on their hands such as I (Or is it “me”? 😈 ) At any rate, I hope I didn’t come across as being pejorative in my multi-linked reply; I only wanted to be sure you had all the facts, including that your “find” was not as rare as you may have hoped… 😉

Not pejorative at all, but who started this “perfesser” stuff some months ago? One of the northeast upstate NY-Ontario boys, I suspect–and I guess it’s harmless enough. I wish I knew enough vocations of fellow Board members to coin some similar spellings, but I don’t. So all in good fun, Mr. Mordant-ator, keep those threads distinct and intact.

I must say, sir, the moniker is used with the utmost respect! 🙂
