John Fullbright made his second appearance at Zoeys last night, the first one since he has become semi-famous.
Local troubadour and pal o’mine Lee Koch opened the show. He was on the first season of the Voice until being bounced by Christine Aguilera. The tour opener, Parker Millsap, followed. Parker is another Oklahoma boy and some kind of child prodigy. He learned to play guitar at a very early age, which wasn’t too long ago since he just turned 20. His act is a marriage of Elvis and James Dean. Really great guitar playing and singing and songwriting. He looks like your paperboy. Big things are ahead for this kid. His last song was about nursery rhyme characters being hooked on hard drugs, delivered with altar boy innocense. You do not get that type of entertainment every day, or at least I hope not.
The other Oklahoma boy was celebrating his birthday, his 25th I think. Fullbright is from the same neck of the woods as Woody Guthrie. He played a mean acoustic guitar, baritone electric guitar, and played the electric piano with a fervor. His touring band includes a guitar player, upright bass player, and drummer. Music just exploded from him. Grumpy and I, and Paul, saw him at the Troubadour on Grammy weekend and he played a very sensitive awesome new song; that did not prepare us for his mega awesomeness last night. He was loud and bluesy and funky and folky too. And a pleasant lad as a post show chit chat revealed. This guy is going to be a huge mega star.
Websiters on scene were myself and Grumpmama, who was on probation for posting that terrible picture of me in the forum but avoided formal sanctions.
