Brutally hot day. It was still in the low 90s when we got to the Hollywood Bowl around 7. Traffic and parking were the usual disaster. We had to park in Studio City and take a crowded shuttle to the Bowl. Seal Team 6 had an easier time getting into Osama’s compound. Impossible to walk 2 feet without somone walking into you and vice versa. There was so much dope smoke in the air I thought I was in a Cheech and Chong movie.
Los Lobos played a 45 mnute opening set starting around 7:36 pm. Knowing there was an 11 pm curfew, I was sorry to see Neil had not taken the stage by 8:45. The stage was dressed a la Rust Never Sleeps; huge amp cases lifted to reveal huge amps, an enormous microphone, “scientists” in white lab coats walking around stage looking seriously at nothing and then excitedly discovering things, writing on their clipboards. Finally, Neil arrives at 9:01. He opened with a 17 minute version of Love and Only Love.
Great show. Lotsa energy. Lotsa new songs. Neil did not disappoint in his guitar playing, He soloed long, loud, and often. The show ended at 11, just under 2 hours. Madhouse trying to exit.
