Lucinda will have a new guitar player for the Australia shows and also for the soon to be announced shows in Austin 4/27 and Phoenix 4/28. I am excited to announce that Stuart Mathis will be joining the band on loan from the Wallflowers, who have just finished recording a new record to be released in Sept.
By all accounts Stuart will be a tremendous addition and perfect fit, with the big seal of approval coming from none other than Doug Pettibone who has known Stuart for years. Doug told me simply “he’s your guy, hire him”.
Don’t need much more than that.
It was a really great year with Blake and we wish him nothing but the best in his future pursuits.

Welcome, Stuart ! [with a Doug Pettibone endorsement to boot].

Best of luck to you Blake! There’s no doubt you have a bright future. We were blessed by your awesomeness.

    Good news for me.
Blake is very talentuous but doesn’t fit with Lu.
I couln’t understand his playing too often. Why avoid the pentatonic scales?

Lucinda has a great talent : she writes wonderful and simple songs.
I don’t want to hear some myloxydian or whatsoever complicated scales on it.
For the new songs it was (most of the time) OK.
For the Dylan’s song, the progression was perfect.
For some old “newly arranged” songs (a la Steal your love) interessing ideas.
Beside, for the other old songs, it was unfitted and sometimes painful to my ears!
Essence, Righteously and Out of Touch were bad but the worst was Carwheels.
The solo in Ventura (the town) on Blessed is laughable : but “quelle merde pompeuse” as we say in french.
    So welcome to the newby.
    Frenchly, Marc

I gotta agree with this marclaff. I was never quite sure what band Blake was in. In his defense, not that he needs any, he is very young and does not have the years of experience as does someone like Doug or Val.

Good luck to the new guy indeed.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I completely disagree with your assertions regarding Blake. One of the things I most admire about Lucinda is her willingness to change band members. She definitely is not adverse to change. Her journey has introduced us to some great guitar players. Doug Pettibone was an interesting progression from Kenny Vaughn and John Jackson. I love their interpretations of her wonderful songs. Blake has his own unique style. I understand his phrasing is not necessarily “mainstream” in comparison to the former guitarists but music is a language with many dialects. I found his renditions of “Car Wheels”, “Copenhagen”, “Jackson”, “Bus to Baton Rouge” and many others to be quite intriguing. I witnessed an incredible version of “Joy” at Meadowbrook in New Hampshire…by far the best I have heard. I am sorry to see him go. That being said, I have complete confidence in Lu’s new choice. In Lu I trust.

I was at the same show at Meadowbrook! It was a nice nite.

Yes it was a very nice night! A young couple gave us 2 of the 4 after-show “Meet & Greet” tickets so we were able to hang-out backstage later. It was a real treat!

I agree with you : i like “intriguing”.
But does it mean nice, sweet, charming to your ears?
But if you are intrigued, you must ask yourself about something, isn’t?
What does he play, why playing that?

May be “intriguing” is a false friend in french meaning something very different.

Perhaps interesting would be a better choice of words.
Take for example this example of Jackson that I find nice, sweet and charming:

Or this example of Car Wheels which I find quite tasteful:

Watch and listen to this ending to Copenhagen (beginning at 2:47) and see the smile on Lu’s face as the song ends:

I realize that Blake pushes the envelope and that sometimes, in pursuit of something he hears inside his head and wants to express, it does not fit together as smoothly as some people prefer but I greatly admire his courage and virtuousity. Sometimes it works better than others but I think the same can be said for all guitarists. In the end, Lu’s smile makes it all worthwhile.

Well said, mshedg, & I could not agree more. While I am very excited at the prospect of seeing Lu & Doug perform together again, I will miss Blake’s genius guitar work. IMHO, he has a great career ahead of him, and I wish him the very best of luck…
