All-Star Cast Joins Rodney Crowell And Mary Karr On New Album
By Bobby Herb February 9th, 2012 at 5:34 pmGrammy-Award winning songwriter Rodney Crowell and New York Times best-selling author Mary Karr have announced a collaborative album, Kin, Songs By Mary Karr and Rodney Crowell, which is due June 5, 2012 on Vanguard Records. Joe Henry produced the album, and Norah Jones, Vince Gill, Lucinda Williams, Lee Ann Womack, Rosanne Cash, Chely Wright, Kris Kristofferson and Emmylou Harris all contribute vocals.
The collaboration began shortly after Crowell’s explicit mention of Karr (who penned the memoir The Liar’s Club) to the likes of Tom Waits and Aretha Franklin in his song “Earth Bound” off of the 2003 album Fates’ Right Hand. Crowell confessed, “I called out to her in the darkness because she was a bona fide poet I knew could write songs, and despite her professor’s pedigree, she’d ridden a bike in a mosquito truck’s fog.”
Upon meeting, the two quickly realized a strong connection between one another and decided to “settle down and raise a record,” as Crowell has simply put it.
“An outlaw pedigree isn’t always a disadvantage for a poet,” says Karr. “This record’s about everybody.”

The beginning of the sample sounds very similar to Soldier’s Song.
I would love to know how many songs Lu has contributed/dueted/appeared. Certainly it has to be close to a Guinness record of some sort? 😛

Lafayette, you may recall our moderator created a thread entitled “Lu’s Guest Appearances” list quite some time ago and he was good enough to post a link to the Excel spreadsheet he created. I saved that list and it runs from 1988 partway thru 2009 and totals 72 appearances.
It seems tntracy is on a buying spree lately for Lu’s guest appearances.
I wonder if he has updated his list and can share it with us.lwj

I need to, LWJ, I need to. Thanks to you & your fantastic “linkability”, I have found several new “guest appearance” songs to download, with two more in the not-to-distant future. I need to update the Wikipedia list as well.
I will make a concerted effort to do both & will post the results when done. Deal? 😉

I downloaded this song today from Amazon.com. It is so beautiful, it is mind-blowing.
I have this obsession with loading song lyrics in iTunes, especially for songs Lu has written and / or performed. Certainly, this song is no exception. But, since I downloaded just the one song instead of buying the CD, I do not have the lyrics in the liner notes to which to refer (assuming they are even there). And, I can not find them anywhere on the Internet.
So, at the very real risk of being made fun of for “misheard lyrics”, this is what I picked out by careful listening. I am fairly confident I got most of them correct, except for the line after “Your old black umbrella” – “Fades half in the rain” just doesn’t seem right to me, but that is what it sounds like. Also, I’m not so sure about the first four lines of the stanza that begins (at least as I heard it), “You’re every curled rose bud”.
Does any one have the definitive lyrics to point out what I got incorrect? Or, does anyone hear anything differently than I did? Thanks for any help…

If Rodney and Mary weren’t on tour now, you could have asked Lefty to visit Prof. Karr at Syracuse U. for a definitive answer. 😆This article from Mother Jones misattributes “Long Time Girl Gone By” to being sung by Lu, when it is actually sung by Emmylou Harris. I don’t see how in the world the author could get their two voices confused! 😯
