Well, I just elbowed paul-from-losangeles away from the computer inside the business center of the Holiday Inn Express Solana Beach, so let’s deem the birthday evening festivities officially begun. Rumour has it there’s a golf tournament rivaling the Belly Up event???
January 27, 2012 at 1:01 am #49238tonygKeymasterHave fun tonight boys. Save something for tomorrow because that show is shaping up to be a winner.
January 27, 2012 at 1:05 am #49239mshedgParticipantEnjoy!! Wish I could be there tonight and tomorrow night! Looking forward to the reports!

Indeed! Doug Pettibone posted on FB that he would be playing the whole night. 🙂
I’m sure the ‘boys’ will be posting tonight’s set list soon, but I just had to say it was an awesome show tonight at Solana Beach, and Lu’s voice sounded especially beautiful. Also, special guests Sara and Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek joined in on several songs both with Blake’s opening set, and Lu’s. Great night!
January 27, 2012 at 2:10 pm #49241tonygKeymasterSorry West Words. Boys and girls. Good report.
January 27, 2012 at 3:50 pm #49242paul_from_losangelesParticipantFolks, I’m trying to post the setlist, but this hotel computer is acting very unfriendly, with timeouts and strange keyboard actions. Briefly, 23 great songs, including Abandoned and Lafayette, featuring Sara Watkins on fiddle. I’ll post this afternoon, after I get home.
January 27, 2012 at 3:58 pm #49243tonygKeymasterCan’t wait!
January 27, 2012 at 5:55 pm #49244punchdrunkloveParticipantABANDONED!
January 27, 2012 at 6:32 pm #49245West WordsParticipantAaaaarrggh, I was also having problems with the
hotel’s internet, gave up after 2 hours. I have video of both ‘Lafayette’ (for Lafayette) with Sara and Sean Watkins, as well as ‘Abandoned’. It’ll have to wait till I get home on Sunday to post. Today and tomorrow are travel days, and tonight is the finale show. 😀 January 27, 2012 at 6:42 pm #49246stogerParticipantFolks, I’m at the same cursed computer and am going to defer to Paul to post from home. I”m sure he’s taking an earlier train than I am north.
A couple of teasers: in addition to Abandoned and Lafayette, we got Like a Rose.
Quote of the night: after a tepid rendition of “Happy Birthday to You” by some elements of the audience between song one and song two, Lu’s immediate reply was “I need a lot more on the vocal up here, John.”
What an anti-sentimentalist, what a woman.
January 27, 2012 at 9:26 pm #49247paul_from_losangelesParticipantOK, now I’m home, after a successful on-time journey by Amtrak. I’ll retrieve my earlier draft, and continue on a computer that understands carriage returns.
Lu’s birthday show, at the sold-out Belly-Up Tavern:
Musically, a remarkable performance, with several older songs not heard for several years.
Comfort-wise, not a great experience: The Belly-Up did not win stars for creature comforts, with the sold-out, enthusiastic audience filling every nanometer of space, both seated and standing. By joining the entry line at 5:55 for the 7 PM doors, I did manage to obtain a close-up bench for sitting, which was far better than stoger and WestWords, who went for dinner and arrived later to stand. Early entry for seats was available if you ate dinner in the adjoining restaurant, but that establishment had sold-out its reservations for the evening hour.
Onward to the music…As WestWords mentioned, Sara and Sean Watkins (associated with Nickel Creek) joined the show to play fiddle and acoustic guitar on several songs, during both Blake’s and Lucinda’s sets.
Lucinda’s setlist:
1. Pineola
2. Drunken Angel
3. Crescent City
4. Jackson
5. Born To Be Loved
6. Trying To Get To Heaven…
7. Fruits of My LaborSara and Sean joined here.
8. West
9. Like A Rose
10. Something About What Happens When We Talk
11. Abandoned
12. Lafayette
13. Well, Well, Well (sorry, my original entry of World Without Tears was not accurate; I now see 3 W’s in my notes.)Sara and Sean left the stage.
14. Can’t Let Go
15. Out Of Touch
16. Essence
17. Down the Big Road Blues
18. Honeybee
19. Changed the Locks (Lu solo, with electric guitar)end main set
20. I Ain’t Got No Home
21. Blessed
22. Joy (with Sara & Sean returning)
23. Get Right With God (with Sara & Sean)An evening of unique music, helped by the commitment to include songs for Sara’s fiddle. Unfortunately, Sara indicated she will not be joining tonight’s show at UCLA.
January 27, 2012 at 9:48 pm #49248LeftyParticipantThank you, paul, stoger & WW!
January 27, 2012 at 10:01 pm #49249tonygKeymasterGreat report Paul. Rest up for tonight.

January 28, 2012 at 1:36 pm #49251LWjettaParticipantGreat reports everyone, looks like a great evening.
Final song of the evening Grammy winner “Get Right With God” was a mere 4:16 min. in its original version.
How about a nine minute jam session version with Sara and Sean.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXZTmL7bcGQMost are probably aware Blake is producing Sara’s new album and Sara will be joining Lucinda on the Cayamo cruise soon.
Have a look and listen inside the studio to the recording sessions of Sara, Sean and Blake.
