My 9th time seeing Lucinda, second time just her and her guitarist. Lucinda sounded great, strong and clear. Hated her new guitarist, Blake Mills. Great technically I’m sure, but progressive interpretation didn’t work. Of course he’s no Doug Pettibone, didn’t expect that, but he was distracting.

The eminently lovable and perhaps sometimes distracting (from lyrics/because of his virtuosity on guitar) Blake Mills did a fine five-song opener in Napa, without “It’ll All Work Out.” Perhaps it was truncated because of some patrons sitting log-like on the plush seats, less engaged certainly than the Santa Cruz and San Juan folks.

    The setlist:

    World Without Tears
    Jackson
    Bus to Baton Rouge
    Memphis Pearl
    Blue
    People Talkin’
Knowing [cp. reviewer’s title in the Santa Cruz press post]
    Kiss Like Your Kiss
    Trying to Get to Heaven
    Drunken Angel
    Pineola
    Crescent City
    Well Well Well
    Can’t Let Go
    Out of Touch
    Don’t Let The Devil Ride
    Changed the Locks
    Honeybee [again, cp. title]

    Hard Time Killing Floor Blues
    Get Right with God

“Pineola” had the most elaborate intro I’ve ever heard, calling some of the graveyard mourners by name and also referencing the poet CD Wright (clearly, though not by name). Lucinda gave a shout-out to the traveling writers of the world here.

Blake went back to a more electronic instrument for Well Well Well after all that 10-string talk in S Cruz.

Lu pronounced herself “not very technically oriented” near end of set.

Forgot a bunch, but thanks to ralph/webmasta for restoration! And good to see longtime fans/friends Tom and Stephanie, to meet Christina and Mark too.

Thanks for the fine mid-winter reading, Roger. Keep on keepin’ on out there! 🙂
