Great show tonight! Lu and the band sounded great and at times, Blake made his guitar sound almost like a piano – never heard anything like it. 🙂

The show was in the “An Evening With” format, where there is no opening act, the first set is the mellower tunes, there’s a brief intermission, and then the second set is the more rocking songs. The only negative was the Ghost of Snooky Future sitting behind us who talked through the entire show, virtually non-stop.

    1. World Without Tears
    2. People Talkin’ (hmmm….maybe this is what gave Snooky the idea…)
    3. Jackson – “This is a beautiful sounding room, and I like the stars in the background.”
    4. I Don’t Know How You’re Livin’ – “I wrote this for my younger brother, the same one I wrote ‘Are You Alright’ about. I am still wondering… He’s sort of the prodigal son, the prodigal brother.”
    5. Copenhagen
    6. Born To Be Loved – “That’s one of my favorite songs to perform, and this next one is my other favorite, that we recently recorded for a Bob Dylan benefit album for Amnesty International”
    7. Trying To Get To Heaven
    8. Fruits of My Labor
    9. Stowaway – “This is a song we wrote but haven’t recorded yet… that will probably be on the next album.”
    10. 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten

    INTERMISSION

    11. Concrete and Barbed Wire
    12. Crescent City – “Emmy Lou Harris did a great version of this song”
    13. Well, Well, Well – Butch wore the frottoir – Cajun word for his washboard vest. Not to be confused with fatwah. Thanks for the vocabulary lesson, Stoger. 😉
    14. Drunken Angel
    15. Buttercup
    16. Righteously
    17. Changed The Locks
    18. Joy
    19. Honey Bee

    ENCORE
    20. Blessed – solo acoustic start with band walking on
    21. Ain’t My Cross To Bear
    22. For What It’s Worth – “…support for the Occupy Wall Street movement, the greatest demonstrations since the Vietnam War protests…” Huge audience enthusiasm.

Hope “frottoir” is correct in zydeco/Cajun circles, west words–I might mean abbatoir. As for the talker behind us, let’s give her some credit: she “can’t believe” Lu played “Fruits of My Labor.” I mean, how many times did she murmur “I can’t believe” through its duration? Hard to think she could quote any of its lyrics, and even I was having trouble, given the undertones and overtones at our backs. Sheez.

Special shout-out to James the soundman, who’s leaving tour temporarily soon to mix a record. He will be missed.

I’ve been itching to hear Lu’s take on Tryin’ To Get To Heaven ever since she announced she’d be recording it, and thanks to the magic of Youtube (and of course the kind fan who recorded it), here’s the Charleston take on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5RN5a3OsGQ. Sounds absolutely amazing to me…she not only does justice to what is IMHO one of Dylan’s greatest songs of the last 30 years, but also reinterprets it in her own way. I can’t wait to hear the studio take.
