what happened to car wheels??? it sounds different. those impeccable riffs all polished, sweet, jazzy and whatnot. i think that quite agreed with the song they being furious and wildly appealing.

Get Right with God {lu signs off with “Love Peace and Revolution–the right kind of revolution–Don’t let the TEa Party–I mean the bastards–get you down”–Immediately one woman ascends the stage and embraces Lu, followed by another woman/another hug before local security and guitar tech Rick shoo them back down]Fine night, though Lu had constant monitor problems and at least a half dozen onstage consultations with monitors guy Seth between songs. Raleigh fans were a bit intrusive with shouted requests, a couple of times drowning out Lu while she was introducing the song already chosen.
Blake Mills did a fine if short opening solo set, topped off by “I Just Wanted to See You So Bad.” During the main set, Lu called him “a star in the making.” Buy his record.
As you know from meeting me in Ontario, lwj, I completely fit the blogger’s prototype in characterizing the Raleigh audience here: a sophisticated, Subaru-driving, Hawaiian-shirt-donning, Whole Food-shoppin’ kind of guy. The blogger must have forgotten the high-end wine goblets some of us had spread out on our designer tablecloths.
At least now I can connect the dots on the yuppie voices yelling out intrusive song requests. . .
I’ve seen over a dozen shows in the last 13 years and watched all the musicians come and go. I first saw this version of the band in KC during a rainstorm (thanks for not stopping Lucinda!). After years with the great Doug Pettibone on guitar, I admit that I was somewhat skeptical about how anyone would fill his shoes.
In KC it was obvious that Blake Mills was still learning the songs, but the other night in Raleigh, it was clear that he’d given up trying to sound like the old band and had made these songs his own. Some great moments on the guitar came out that night, particularly some of the slide stuff.
Blake’s opening set was very well done and a perfect start to a hot evening.
Now I’m bummed that I didn’t drive up for the Richmond show 😉

yes, i sense that too. i didn’t mean to sound disrespectful before. i don’t expect the album versions of the songs to be exactly rendered on stage – imagine how boring this would be. there’s not a song in the world that is such a monumental cornerstone that you can’t do something new about it out of respect. in fact, i like to be surprised. and i was surprised. not a bad thing. rock on et al.
i’m eager to listen what lucinda and the band can do with songs as diverse as real love, memphis pearl and sharp cutting wings.
