Looking at the remaining tickets for Thursday night’s show in Macon, GA, there are only 17 left and 7 of those are scattered singles.
Last night, I just finalized my plans to attend – I am really, REALLY looking forward to this show! Not only is it the last show of this leg of the tour, but, as Lu told us in Cleveland, this is the first time she has ever performed in Macon, after living there as a child. (Everyone remember Lu’s Rev. Pearly Brown anecdote she told in Atlanta at the Tabernacle in March, 2009?) So, I think this might be a very special show. Plus, with it being a benefit for the old Capricorn Records recording studio in town, who knows who may make a surprise guest appearance? 😉
Stoger will be there, as will West Words (wish you could make it, Lafayette!!!!! 😥 ), and stoger will be staying with us after the show (look out Waffle House, here we come!). He & I are even discussing making a “side trip” to Birmingham the next night to see Angela Easterling.
WOO HOO! Lu in a small Southern city where she once lived and in my backyard! I CAN”T WAIT!!! 😀 😀 😀

Car wheels on a gravel roadI hope she plays “Car Wheels”! I’m beyond excited for Macon: not only will it be my first time seeing Lucinda, it’ll be my real first concert. And I’m in my 30s. Seriously. If she plays “Car Wheels” and “Come On,” I may vanish into joy.

Oh…my…word. What a show.
It is 4:00 AM & we just got home from Macon (2 hour drive). Needless to say, very, very tired – I will post the set list tomorrow. For now I will say that the highlight of the evening for me was Lu & the boys performing a cover of the classic Allman Brothers song, “It’s Not My Cross To Bear” (Lu’s intro: “Here’s something we worked up today”), with Blake playing Dickey Betts’ guitar (given to him by Mr. Betts himself). WOW!! Lu really belted out the vocals! 😉

DisgustedWhat a cool little venue the Cox Capitol Theatre is! At only 350 capacity, it was wonderfully intimate. It reminded me of Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville, OH. Seating downstairs was a wonderful “mishmash” of large tables (some old writing desks, others the long “institutional” folding tables like you see in schools, etc.) with 4, sometimes 6 seats around. To the right (facing the stage) of the soundboard, there were 3 or 4 rows of matching old upholstered armchairs. We were all seated at a large folding table just to the other side of the soundboard from the armchairs. What a wonderful change of pace that was! Lots o’ room to spread out, we could lean on the table, or stretch our legs out, or even stand w/o fear of blocking anyone’s view as we were right in front of a raised area that housed a bar. There was also a decent-sized open area just to our left, in front of a few stairs that lead up to the bar area. This became the “party” area, where all the rowdy, boogying folks congregated. It was a blast!
The stage was smallish, but had enough room for Lu & the boys. And, the acoustics of the room where wonderful. Match that with Lu’s stellar soundboard guy & it made for an excellent-sounding show. Top all this off with very reasonable drink & food prices (Sarah & I had a plate of chicken & sausage jambalaya, field greens salad w/ Vidalia onion dressing & french bread for only $10 each!), and this was maybe the best venue I have ever had the pleasure of visiting.
Lu & the band were in fine spirits, and were smokin’ hot. For those interested in the fashion report, Lu wore jeans with her metal-studded Old Gringo boots, a lovely (and sexy!) black bustier-style top with a denim shirt over it buttoned at the bottom, and a great coiled snake necklace. Lu chatted with the audience quite a bit between songs, talking about her childhood in Macon, how this was the first time since then she has been back, how she was “drawn” to Macon, etc. (I will leave it to my friend West Words to fill in some of the actual dialog here later; she took notes). The hometown crowd lapped up every word.
All in all, a very memorable evening that for me personally ranks up there as one of the better Lu shows I have had the pleasure of attending. I am so very thankful we were able to attend!

A note on the “He’s God” song title with prior discussion about blues songs and song titles that morph. Here is info I posted in the Nelsonville, OH show recap thread about this song.
I loved this song so much, after this show, that upon Lu’s advice, I went searching for Blind Pearly Brown’s music, since Lu said it was her first musical interest. It lead me to some fascinating finds and more dot connecting.I easily found a few CD’s of Blind Pearly Brown’s on amazon, ordered one, and discovered, upon listening to the CD, that “He’s God” is actually “God Don’t Never Change.” Further research had me discovering that Blind Pearly Brown was covering Blind Willie Johnson. The song (if my research is accurate) was originally recorded in New Orleans in Dec, 1929.

Tom has nailed the evening so well there’s little to add here. “Hyacinth Girl” got the title track of Car Wheels, with a great intro speaking of learning to read and write (first and second grades) in Macon, plus the narrative of hearing Blind Pearlie Brown downtown. Lucinda genuinely was moved to be back in this part of the country.
Special shout-out to Susan from Sandersville, Forum “lurker” extraordinnaire: nice conversation afterwards about past shows and past lead guitar players. Middle Georgia rocks.

Tom, I think you actually sat right in front of me! And “Car Wheels” was unbelievable last night. Unbelievable. What a show!
Any idea what upset her early on, though? Was she talking about the flashes from the camera or the sound?

If you are referring to the times she was talking to the sound tech between songs, that was due to some problem she was having with her in-ear wireless monitor…
