Song Premiere: Tom Russell – “Mesabi”“For the singer-songwriter’s latest work, Tom Russell stocked-up on plenty of big name collaborators, inviting artists including Lucinda Williams, Van Dyke Parks, Sir Douglas Quintet keyboardist Augie Meyers and Calexico to join him during the recording process. Russell’s open-book policy shines throughout his twang-tinged compositions. On “Mesabi,” a well-proportioned blend of horns injects a welcomed jolt of emotion into its chorus of guitars, successfully reminding us that just because he’s amassed a loyal audience, Russell isn’t interested in sticking to a cookie-cutter formula.
Mesabi, the 26th release from Russell, is set to be released Sept. 6″.“But the remarkable cover, with Lucinda Williams and Calexico, of Bob Dylan’s most haunting song “Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall”, made my hair stand on end. I never thought anything could beat the original, but this one does.”
Let’s watch Bob in Japan from 1994 doing his song with a full orchestra.

I am not a techie. I am so old school, I prefer hard copies over digital and understand very little about download rates and such.
Sooooo….chalk me up in the curmudgeon+ista column as it applies to downloads. 🙂
128 Kbps is a relatively low bit rate (iTunes & Amazon both sell 256 Kbps as their minimum). Lower bit rate = lower quality sound (similar to a lower resolution photo doesn’t look as good). I would equate 128 Kbps with FM radio, if that…
