A friend of mine has a one hour radio program on Mankato independent public radio, The Maverick KMSU 89.7 FM. In honor of her show on July 10th, he’ll be devoting his July 5th show to Lucinda and her music. It’s a program called “We Want the Airwaves” and it is on from 2 – 3 pm on Tuesdays. He promises me that he’ll play a wide variety of her tunes. The show can be streamed here:

Can’t wait for the show in a brand new outdoor amphitheater “down by the river”! If anyone needs a beverage prior to the show, The Oleander Saloon is just the place. Built in 1901, it looks like nothing has been done to the place since then and has the strongest and cheapest drinks in town. I am glad Lucinda decided to play a show in this beautiful town.
I’m excited for this show as well…feel lucky that Lucinda’s returning so soon after the Rochester gig, and am THRILLED we got another outdoor ampitheater for concerts closeby.
I got great seats, and am bringing some others with. My parents are coming to the show. Also, my sister Amanda is coming with her fiance Alex (all the way from Germany!)…he’s more of a Queen/prog rock guy, but I have no doubts seeing Lu live will open another door for him. I have told them that Kiss Like Your Kiss would be the perfect first song as a married couple!

Here is an excerpt.“It is my belief that Lucinda is the closest living counterpart to Hank Williams, when it comes to writing from the heart with absolute economy,” wrote her frequent collaborator Elvis Costello in a blurb for Williams’ “Live at The Fillmore” album. “It is a bonus that her rock and roll vocal style will shake up any band in a fashion that I can only compare to Keith Richards’ guitar playing.”

JoyA long day for me and my wife ended great with the show…so nice to have a second show in relative near time in MN…
This was a long week for us, as a good friend and co-worker passed away on the 4th in a motorcycle accident. Very good man filled with optimism and humor. His funeral was Sunday afternoon, so we attended the service prior to the show. The concert was a great release…helped me take another step in dealing with our loss, and also gave us some release. For that I’m grateful.
I was (in equal parts) desperately needing and also hoping against Lu playing a couple of songs: 2 Kool or Lake Charles. Tidal wave effect during each chorus – the words are spot on I hope – but at the end it was so cathartic…left us feeling warm. Funny how events make other songs touch you differently too…Blessed and I Lost It in particular last night.
No more gloom – other notes/highlights:
Lucinda had a white cowgirl hat, black tank top with green shirt over, and a light blue scarf to match her nails.
We were in the 3rd row in front of Blake with my folks and my sister and her fiance. My mom and pop really liked it. I think my dad was really struck by how many different genres of music Lucinda takes on each show…but as my wife says, it’s just American music!
Jailhouse Tears was fun. A roadie had come out to tape what I thought was a new cue sheet by Blake, but it ended up being the lyrics. Lucinda indicated this was a tour debut, and you could see she was nervous how it would go (At the First Ave show to kick off Little Honey, I think it had 2-3 false starts). I think it ended up great. Best part was the interaction between the two. Blake really hammed it up, singing and gesturing right at Lu. Lu wouldn’t look at him, as if she didn’t want to break out and lose her focus.
I thought Buttercup and Essence rocked. So powerful. I also really dug the harmonies tonight by the band. Sometimes that’s easy to forget.
Towards the end of the main set, it appeared that lightning was heading our way, but it ended up being distant fireworks. Lucinda commented that they were happy to see them, as they were up in Canada during the holiday and missed out.
Freedy Johnston opened…big hit was Bad Reputation. We were towards the back of the theater in the shade when they started, and from a distance his bass player was a dead ringer for Gary Louris of the Jayhawks, and the guitarist looked like Paul Westerburg (when his shades were on). Alas – no.
Very nice new ampitheater…only thing missing was a view of the river.
We got absolutely pounded by rain on the way home as the humidity finally reached its breaking point. High winds and sideways downpours. A 90 minute drive took an extra 30-40 minutes as we had to slow down most of the drive back to MSP. Hope all attendees got home safe, and that the crew got most of their work done before the rain hit.
On the way out I recognized Tom chatting with a fan…but chickened out introducing myself. Very glad we decided to attend – it was just what we needed. Here’s to hoping First Ave. pops onto the itinerary this fall…

What a fun evening in my hometown. Not sure how many people came in from out of town but all things considered, I thought it was a solid turnout, and I doubt anyone left feeling less than satisfied.
Loved it when Lucinda said during Joy…’West Memphis…this feels like West Memphis.’ Damn I was glad the rain held off until about a half hour after the show ended. I’d been looking at the weather report all week and it didn’t look good at all.
I was lucky enough to meet Lucinda and Tom outside the bus after the show. Very nice people.
I found it funny when I brought it up that Lucinda had no recollection of Are You Alright being on an episode of The Sopranos. Just a blank stare. I said, Yeah, you know the episode where Tony kills (I won’t spoil it for those that haven’t seen it) and goes to Vegas…? She called Tom over, and he seemed to remember it.I was about literally seconds away from getting a picture with her, and then the wind and rain came, Lucinda said, “Tom, maybe we should go in the bus” and I figured I’d best not press my luck.

I live about five blocks from the park and my power was out when I got home.
