Last flourish of “Stand on the Rock” occurs at 22:29:59–thus, no pulling of the plug!

David Lindley was summoned off stage about 35 minutes into his set, perhaps to avoid a repeat of any Robert Earl Keen-like encore from last year. The hook.

Lucinda, what happened? We were all there, but you kept us waiting for half an hour, before you sidled onto the stage, mumbled a hello, and started singing with the amps so loud it was difficult to hear the words you sang. Your hair looked like bed hair, your shirt wasn’t buttoned all the way down and you took no time to chat with your fans.

Your new songs are all on the dark side — what happened to the humor and satire of your earlier lyrics? And the verses repeated themselves — one verse of these would have been sufficient. Graham your guitarist was terrific and your bass player talented; your drummer way too loud and didn’t know when to stop. I’ve been a fan since your first tape was produced and I heard it over the radio in NYC. I rushed out to buy it. Boy, what a let down. We left early. So did any number of other fans. Hope you can climb out of whatever trough of pain you’re in and reclaim the old Lucinda.

Oh, I forgot to mention–just to get this stream back on Planet Earth–that I sat next to friends of John “Butch” Norton at the Saratoga show: they knew him when, one person claiming him as her first ever (high school) boyfriend.
