Looking forward to Lafayette’s embellishments on the concert.

In the meantime here is a pre-concert article from The Chicago Sun-times.
Entitled ” Lucinda is a poet at heart “

A session group, as Lu referred to during her end of show grats, The Bono Bros, opened the show.

This show was a fundraiser for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. An auction of framed pieces of memorabilia followed the opening act’s slot for the benefit of this organization, including a BB King signed show bill ($2,600), a Derrick Rose signed Chicago Bulls jersey ($2,300), and my favorite, a framed photo of Lucinda Williams, from her Farm Aid appearance ($1,700). A guitar was also auctioned off. Both of these also came with a meet & greet with Lu to have them signed. For kicks and giggles, I bid $700 on the Lu framed photo. I was happy bidding proceeded onward as Lucy would have had some ‘splaining to do to Ricky if she had come home toting said prize.

I was starting to spazz a little as the auction proceeded, more from a selfish perspective. I thought we would be extremely shortchanged on a lengthy show from Lu as a result. The auction ended. Terri Hemmert, music host with WXRT and a Radio Hall of Famer (as noted by my brother), took to the stage to say a few words. She attempted to introduce the mayor of Chicago, Rahm Immanuel, who was sitting on the drum riser, turned to bring him to microphone, but he had disappeared. Yup, that’s right. There was much speculation Rahm would be there. Terri left, returned a few minutes later, to introduce Rahm. He, in turn, introduced Lu by saying he was a fan, had seen her six times prior with his last show being at The Riveira, and with that, he exited with a kiss to Lu’s cheek as she took to the stage. Lu’s set began at 9:40.

There was little banter from Lu as I’m sure she was aware of time constraints. The one mention was, of course, in regards to the rapture. “Well, we’re all still here” was Lu’s observation and much chatter from Lu on “Atonement” and the origin of that song, and how she does not buy into the evangelical “fear based ideology I refuse to follow.” She didn’t have her Keds on, but some kicking cross studded Gringo boots ( I assume). I think Blake was wearing her Keds, he had on some red shoes reminiscent of said sneaker. 😉

The show ended around 11:40. I was grateful we heard a full set. Lu strayed from the set list taped to the floor, especially toward the end . My guess would be the late start. “Come On Baby” was on the list as the last song. Anyone familar with this? I’ll expand on how much the set list strayed but for now I don’t have the list in my possesion as I type.

The crowd was interesting. I was at the stage standing next to a self professed musician, his claim and Jim, a long time forum lurker, who as it turns out, has had chats with Disco Stu and attends a multitude of shows in the Chicago area. I also turned to find a guy I had met the last time I attended a Park West Lu show, another musician, as well as recognizing a couple at the stage, also in attendance at the former honeymoon show.

Of course, what would a GA show be without drunk end-of-show stage crashers. Extremely drunk girls, again. They were extending arms to try to shove me aside, between Jim and I. I turned and shoved back. Jeez, what the lack of hormones has done to my personality when it comes to confrontaton. 😆 As it turned out, the quiet, hip looking musician next to me wasn’t having any of it either. They tried extending arms between us to shove thru (again) and he was pushing back as well. I looked at him and said “protect the space.” I really think they would have tried to climb on stage to get to Lu they were that drunk (they were doing that after the show ended). At least this time I didn’t have any beer thrown on me ala The Orange Peel.

Lafayette, what a great recap of the show you have given us.-May easily qualify for post of the year.
I know where the new Mayor disappeared to when he was about to be introduced.

The origin’s of the song “Come on Baby” are many-can’t give an answer after a google search.
Lafayette, there is great risk standing by the stage at a GA show 😆 . Glad the quiet hip looking musician gave you some protection.
I found your post dated September 12, 2010 when you visited the Country Music Hall of Fame and saw, what I believe was the framed Lucinda photo from Farm Aid 2004 that you lost the bidding on. Am I correct “Lucy” as to the photo ? It’s a beaut.
Finally, how did your brother enjoy the concert ?

Thanks again for your outstanding commentary.

Glad to see you survived both the charging Park West drunks and the predicted Apocalypse in general, Lafayette. You didn’t have tntracy as an elbow-throwing buffer a la Asheville, but it sounds like you had allies. This report brought me news in both the musical and political senses; has Immanuel already been elected? Last I heard, he was struggling to establish city residency (cp. his former boss’ efforts to do so on a national level). I guess I need to tune in to WGN more. And perhaps the listed song was “Come to Me Baby,” a Howlin’ Wolf cover which was a pretty standard set-closer for Lu circa 2002-03? That would have been fitting, given the Wolf’s move to the Windy City out of Mississippi way back when.

Given that the world is still [too?] much with us, who will step up for Park West night two report?

Actually the Mayor was on the bus talking to Lu when they introduced him, because one of his people came in and told him that he had been introduced. But wasn’t leaving before he got a chance to talk to Lu, who was just finishing getting ready in the back of the bus. He said had been talking with the president in the afternoon and he told him that he was going to see Lucinda that night and he very matter of factly said the president told him that Unsuffer Me, was his favorite song anf to tell her to play it (there was a little confusion about the title and I have a feeling he might have meant Righteously, but we’ll never know–so for the record it will be Unsuffer Me).
Unsuffer Me was indeed on the setlist. All I can say that the Mayor is a HUGE fan, and the fact that he and the president were talking about her that afternoon really blew Lu’s mind.

Can’t decide whether to divulge the identity of “Come On Baby” or let it be a surprise when we finally do it… ❓

So you got the Mayor and the President in your corner. Good work.

P.S. How funny if he said he liked Wrap My Head Around That?

P.P.S. When he posts in the forum then you got something.

Divulge, please! The forum could miss out totally if no road warriors are there to report.

BTW…acknowledgement from the stage duly noted, much appreciated! 8)

I have photos to post, including a great one of Rahm sitting on the riser. Set list talk to follow as well.

The framed photo was the picture featured on the wall of the Country HOF, however, it was not the same one. I’ll post a pic. The framing(guitar related) was explained before the bidding started, but it was very hard to hear. I have to say the sound was not exceptional at the front of the stage throughout the show as well.

My brother liked the show. He was going back and forth all night between the front of stage and the back of room. His favorite song of the night was Buttercup. He was hoping to hear “Angel”

I forgot to add the music playing as we exited after the show…”It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine).
