Count me among Ray Wylie Hubbard’s newest fans! 😉

Like many other musicians, I had heard his name, but not seriously checked him out. Last weekend, I rode w/ a good friend of mine to Cincinnati, where he was running in a marathon (we also went to a Reds game & saw Kinky Friedman across the river in Newport, KY while we were there!). In his car, he has factory installed Sirius XM. Shortly after leaving my house, I asked him if I could switch it to the “Outlaw Country” station – he agreed.

Wow – good stuff on this station! I fell in love with it – and Sirius XM – on the drive to Cincinnati & back home to Georgia. Not only did they play 3 different Lu songs while we were listening (“Hot Blood”, “Drunken Angel” & “Changed The Locks”), but they also played a lot of other great Americana & Roots music. Including “Drunken Poet’s Dream” off of Ray Wylie Hubbard’s new album, A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C). I LOVED this song, and ordered the CD when I got home.

The whole album is very, very good. Rootsy, raw-edged Blues & Americana music at it’s best, delivered with Ray’s growling vocals. I LOVE it. I am about to order some more of his CDs, like Snake Farm & Growl.

    Any other RWH fans here?

RWH did a show here in T-town last thursday night. just a drummer (a very good one) and he did quite a few songs, including some from his new cd, Grifter’s Hymnal. it was the first time ive seen him and we enjoyed it very much. i esp liked his ‘messenger’ and ‘drunken poets dream’ which he said he’d cowrote w/ Hayes Carll. RWH is very funny and tells alot of interesting stories about his life, family and travels, very enjoyable, imo. anyway his last song in the set was Choctaw Bingo which is hilarious and the encore was You Gotta Move, maybe to honor the birthday of the Rev Gary Davis, which is today 30 April.
anyway, he’s on the road so check him out if he gets to your neck of the woods!

Well, I managed to miss RWH the last time he came through the Atlanta area (I didn’t hear about his show at the EARL until afterwards), but I just got tickets to (finally) see him at Smith’s Olde Bar on March 23rd. Woo hoo! 8)

    way to go tom!
we got our second RWH show the other night and he played some different songs than we saw last year. it was more like a fan club meeting than a concert, place was almost sold out and a very adoring crowd, but Ray was funny and ornery as ever. he’s a helluva guitar player, too. go see him! he is a blast to see live!
