In the Other Stuff thread I mentioned (or apparently teased about) two other artists that Lucinda was going to do upcoming guest appearances with and one of them just happened a couple of days ago.
She sang on a new song from the band Over The Rhine for their upcoming record being produced by Joe Henry. Joe emailed and asked if Lucinda would want to sing on a new song of theirs because he knew that they were huge fans of Lucinda’s and they had mentioned to him that she was a big influence. He also sent along a song of theirs called “Jesus In New Orleans”, and a new one he wanted her to sing on. Lu played them and was blown away-and she insisted I come down to her office immediately and give them a listen. Here is her response to Joe:

    Joe,
My God! This is some of the most gorgeous stuff I’ve ever heard! Both of these songs–the writing, the vocals! Her voice is simply stunning. “Jesus In New Orleans” made me cry.
    I’m in.
    Love,
    Lu

Lucinda was flabbergasted the she had never heard of them before. I knew about them from several years ago but had lost track of them over the years and didn’t they were still around.
I wanted to make a special mention in here because their story is one of perseverance and a great example of the will of the DIY spirit and how they have survived and succeeded despite flying under the radar for 15 years plus. OTR is basically the husband and wife team of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist and as great as they are as musicians, after getting to spend some time with them this week, they are also fantastic people and now great friends.

The song Lucinda sang on is called Undamned and it is great–Luicnda likened it to he song Unsuffer Me.
Unfortunately I don’t think the new record will be out until Jan. of next year, but I think if you give a listen to Jesus In New Orleans, which Linford, who writes most of the lyrics, credited with being very influenced by Lucinda. That is very flattering because when you give it a listen you will hear something truly special and be as floored as Lucinda and I have been.

PS- Lafayette -I’m guessing you may know of this band as they live outside of Cincinnati and they are named after a neighborhood in Cincy.

Tom O, YES ❗ I am very familiar with Over The Rhine! They are the darlings of roots based music in Cincinnati, in fanbase, by the local media, and on WNKU 89.7. I, unfortunately, have never had the privilege of seeing them play live, as the timing never seemed to work.

As a testament to the support both OTR and Lucinda receive in Cincinnati on WNKU, note the following polls on the annual Top 89 records of the year, as voted by listeners.

In 2003, the first year of voting, OTR released Ohio voted #1 with World Without Tears clocking in at #3 http://wnku.org/page_wnku.asp?p=0529950

    In 2005, OTR Drunkard’s Prayer voted #2. http://www.wnku.org/page_wnku.asp?p=0531010

In 2007, OTR The Trumpet Child voted #1 and West voted #5. http://www.wnku.org/page_wnku.asp?p=0531650

    In 2008, Little Honey voted #1. http://www.wnku.org/page_wnku.asp?p=0531750

In regards to “Jesus In New Orleans,” that song was recorded on OTR’s “Ohio” release. That record was recorded at Echo Park in Bloomington, IN, which I am sure you recognize 🙂 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_(album). I recognize several names on their additonal personnel list, including Paul Mahern.

This double release was also performed in its entirety in 2008, as Over The Rhine christened the brand new 4,100 seat National City Pavillion (now PNC Pavillion) on the Riverbend Music Center property to a sold out show. I could be wrong, but I think when I was lobbying in these forums for Lu to play Cincinnati, I mentioned OTR and Lucinda would make a great pairing. I will have to research that later. Here, in a 30 second clip is JINO

In regards to Over The Rhine, the neighborhood, very briefly, as described on wiki: The link provides the entire history of the area. It’s a VERY dangerous area, one I cannot bring myself to visit unless I am there for the fall Midpoint Music Festival when I know tons of people are around.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Over-the-Rhine

“Once the home of nineteenth century German immigrants, by the end of the twentieth century Over-the-Rhine had become known as Cincinnati’s most infamous ghetto.[6] Since the late 1970s historic preservationists and low-income housing advocates have been battling over whether the neighborhood should be a “chic” historic district or a sanctuary for the poor. In the 1980s preservationists got Over-the-Rhine listed as a historic district while social activists expanded the number of federally subsidized low-income housing units by the thousands. In the late 1990s Over-the-Rhine’s Main Street briefly became the city’s premier nightlife destination, but race riots in 2001 and escalating violent crime drove visitors away.[7] In 2006, Over-the-Rhine was listed as one of America’s Most Endangered Places due to “rampant crime, reluctance of investors to commit to renewal and renovation, and an increasing pattern of demolition as authorities seek to address public safety concerns.”[8]

I’ll stop here, for now, except to link to a WNKU On Air Karen and Linford did during a pledge drive in 2007, conducted by my favorite all around music host, coincidentally a Mellencamp, Lucinda fan (truly). I think Karen, in this particular performance, sounds very similar to Erika Wennerstrom.

Good stuff, TO, with Lucinda, AND the new found friendship with Karen and Linford.

You must be half way through a bottle by now, eh?

    Great report Lafayette.
There is not much to add, but I’ll try.
Perusing their web site gives a number of innovative approaches to their music.
    Here is the site.

In order to raise funds for the production costs for the new album (with Lu) they are asking for donations at various levels much like WNKU and all other public radio stations. In return, you can get advance copies of the CD, your name in the CD jewel case, special invitation only concerts, etc.
If you really want to splurge and can afford it you can accompany Karen and Linford on a musical train ride out West. ( Didn’t Janis Joplin do the train ride tour as well? )
Now, I’m just wondering out loud, that since Karin and Linford state that there will be a number of musical guests on board the train and it departs from LA Connect the ……Aren’t LU and TomO living in LA?

I concur-down to Karin’s blond hair style a la Erika. Great voice.

And here is the song “Undamned” sung for the moment by Karin, Lucinda’s contribution will not be heard until January on OTR’s new album “The Long Surrender”. Beautifull lyrics.
Karin performed the song at the Cornerstone Music Festival in July.
    Watch and enjoy.

p.s. Lafayette will be seeing OTR tomorrow night in Cinci at the Moonlight Gardens and also maybe even tonight at the Mercy Lounge in Nashville, so we await her report.

I’ve just returned from the OTR show at Moonlight Gardens. Gorgeous evening, tables full, packed “house.”

“Undamned” was performed early in the set, with Karin mentioning Lucinda Williams as a guest on the song. I was going to tape this song as well, however, signs posted specifically requesting no audio or video taping nixed that thought.

It was a wonderful evening, and Cincinnati truly loves OTR as evidenced by the crowd tonight.

More Lu awaits us with OTR’s release of their record on Jan 11, 2011.

A review from the show the other night with a significant amount of pondering about Lu. TO, you must set up a one off or something with Lu & Over the Rhine in Cincy. Would be magnificent.

    http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20100911/ENT03/309110029/1028/ENT/Over-The-Rhine-return-with-new-music-and-news

Had Lucinda Williams appeared to sing her part, Over The Rhine’s sneak peak of their forthcoming album would have been a more complete event.

As it was, fans of the longtime Cincinnati band got to hear the news about Lucinda and hear several things for the first time, as OTR’s husband-and-wife duo of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist put on a show at Coney Island’s Moonlite Gardens Saturday night that had a balance of old songs and new.

The new came from “The Long Surrender,” a studio album set for a release Jan. 11. “One-eleven-eleven,” Bergquist noted. “I thought that would be easy to remember.”

Bergquist and Detweiler revealed a couple of notes about “The Long Surrender,” the band’s first studio album since 2007. It was produced by Joe Henry, whose credits include celebrated comeback records by R&B singers Solomon Burke and Bettye LaVette. Henry’s band plays on the album, which includes a duet with Williams.

That song, titled “Undamned,” was sung entirely by Bergquist, so it was impossible to know which verses were Lucinda’s. But it wasn’t hard to imagine her singing it, and Over The Rhine guitarist Kenny Hutson’s slide-guitar leads gave the song some Lucinda-style atmospherics.
