As a fairly new fan, one notoriously late to the party (i.e. LU), I always find Lucinda’s past fascinating. I have discovered a few gems (at least to me) that actually revolve around another artist I love and support (nope, it’s not Mr. Mellencamp .) So, let me begin.

I’ve been going to several shows over the past few weeks supporting an independent artist, Stoll Vaughan, whom I met on a Mellencamp tour several years ago. I’ve been uploading some footage from his shows and went in search of some additional material (much like our beloved lwj 🙂 and found a gem (to me) of him performing at a benefit turned jam session. He played one of his songs and then segued into a cover which I was just loving. I searched for what I thought might be the song title and found little information on the song EXCEPT for two YouTube performances by Greg Garing. It was indeed the song Stoll was covering.

I didn’t know anything about Greg Garing 😳 so I tried to find info on him to see if “Down Past The Bottom” was his song. I still haven’t verified yet but maybe someone can offer some info. Then, I decided to search for Greg Garing / Lucinda Williams (it only makes sense, right, she is a national treasure!) and found photos, lots of articles, even info she had written a foreword for a book, about the Nashville lower Broadway scene that they, Lucinda and Greg, among others, helped shape in the 90’s.

Even more intriguing, I asked Stoll, last night when I saw him for the 3rd time in less than a week ❗ about “Down Past The Bottem,” which I assume is Greg’s song (although Stoll mumbled it was an old blues song) as I can find NO information on this song other than the 2 videos. Oh, wow, what a response. He told me he ran into Greg in Nashville after a friend had given him a record of his to listen to. Stoll loves bluegrass, told Greg he was a big fan, and apparently was hanging with him for several months. He told me he thinks he is one of the greatest players and he tries to emulate Greg when he plays.

Gosh thanks for the beloved lwj comment, you are now leading into your Masters in”Luology” Lafayette.
Greg only has released one album called “Alone” and one Ep, neither of which contain “Down Past the Bottom”
I googled and couldn’t find the source of this song.

However, as I’ve mentioned before in this forum, it’s amazing how much is linked to Lucinda.
Here we can connect the ……….and find out how another Vaughan got connected with Lucinda.
An article from WPLN Nashville Radio about Kenny Vaughan. You can also listen to Kenny’s interview.

    And here is an excerpt.
    QUOTE:
Nashville also offered plenty of work. Vaughan got hired for a road job by country duo Sweethearts of the Rodeo. He played on Lower Broadway with eccentric honky-tonk artist Greg Garing, which led to meeting Lucinda Williams and a job with her. There were studio sessions as well, including a fair amount of mainstream country, which he endured more than enjoyed.END QUOTE:
Nice how all the ………fit together.

Yes, it is cool how all the …… connect ! The other night Stoll also brought up Kenny Vaughan. Kenny (I assume) was/is playing with Marty Stuart. Stoll opened several shows for Marty, whom he absolutely adores as well. He proceeded to tell me, as he was relaying his Greg story, that “Kenny Vaughan is one of the great session players and he said he would PAY to play with Greg.” I must have misunderstood him, especially with the revelation Kenny played with Greg.

Thanks for looking lwj! The mystery still continues as to the origin of “Down In The Bottom.”

The book is now on my wish list.

Looks like we will have to emulate the search initiated by Drunken Angel back in October for “This Blue”-took over 2 months to solve.
I’ve Googled but haven’t Yahooed yet to find the origin of the song.
If all else fails we could write directly to Greg at his MY Space site.
Loved his video with his Band of Angels.

Here is the only other You Tube on this song that I could find.
Izzy Zaidman formerly with the Wayne Hancock Band now with Izzy and the Kesstronics performing “Down Past the Bottom”
    Have a listen.

I sent a personal message on You Tube to Izzy asking about the song.
We’ll see if we get an answer to solve the mystery.

I love Izzy Zaidman’s version, too! I’m beginning to wonder if this is truly the song title. You would think with 2 different artists posting it on YT as such it is indeed the song title, it’s just so weird there is no recorded version coming up when searching . Anxious to see if you hear a response lwj. Thanks!

Here is a link to some photos from Bill Rouda’s “NASHVILLE’S LOWER BROAD: The Street That Music Made” with the foreword written by Lucinda. There are several photos of Lucinda featured, one of them at Robert’s Western World. More dot connecting. Back in April I drove to Nashville by myself to catch Amos Lee at Mercy Lounge. I was asking the gal at the merch table, a local, for a good place to catch some late night live music after Amos’s show . She directed me to Robert’s. I was staying on Broadway, random luck, drove down the street, but didn’t have the nerve to saunter in to Robert’s.

So sorry. I just had an Edith Bunker moment ^. Here’s the link.
