Lafayette posted under Lu general on Feb.11/2010 an article from Slaid Cleaves re: the closing of the Cactus Cafe in Austin.
Last July the third annual tribute night to Hank and Lucinda took place at the Cactus Cafe.
Here is a link to the Austin Chronicle review.
Singer”Southpaw Jones” learned and sang from an early version of “Out of Touch” which he said is starkly different from the final version in “Essence”.
I can’t find a video of his performance but does anyone on this Forum have the demo version?
This could be another “This Blue” search for those interested.
Here is the article.

Interesting Tom considering the time difference between CWOAGR, Essence and this Austin Chronicle article.
Here is a quote.
LW: It was written before Car Wheels. I had some of the lyrics as far back as 10 years ago. Like I first wrote “Out of Touch” in 1981 when I moved back to Austin with Clyde. I have it on an old demo tape that far back. It went through all these different incarnations and rewrites. I was almost going to put it on Car Wheels, but I’m glad I didn’t.
AC: When I first heard “Out of Touch,” I interpreted it as a soundtrack for meeting an old love. Another reviewer said it was about Gurf Morlix.
LW: I wasn’t thinking about the ex-lover thing as much as the plight of the human condition. That awkwardness, being out of touch. The ones I wrote about Gurf were “Reason to Cry” and “Broken Butterflies.” That anger. Here is the full article from the Chronicle Aug.10/2001 entitled “Spit Out the Seeds” ( Another good read on Lucinda, then again, aren’t they all? )

So, Tom which version do you prefer?

lwjI much prefer the “official” version on Essence – I love the rock / blues tempo & vibe. I suppose one reason is I was a rock & blues fan (since my childhood & teens) long before I expanded my musical tastes & got into other genres like country, alt-country, Americana, etc.
Also, “Out Of Touch” is one of my favorite songs to hear Lu play live…

How can “county, ” alt-country,” and “Americana, etc” be put into categories such as genres? Country? Wow… and when LWs plays OOT live and it’s your fav, who is in the band? On guit and drums?…

David Byrne?

And then there’s Merle and Waylon and M. Ward and Juana Molina and Jack Johnson, Don Walser, The Wiyos, Dale Watson, Hank III/Assjack, Elvis Costello, Jim Lauderdale, and Old Crow Medicine Show, and, and… How and why classify? Dieselbilly, Acidfolk, Grillbilly–Whatever–! So hard to call out all these little categories… country, alt-country, etc…
