Wow, I am always amazed by the amount of energy and shock that are reflected whenever individuals talk about Ticketmaster fees, et al. As if something can be done in face of millions of dollars and acres of corruption. As if… There is only one person we can change but it’s the hardest person to change. With this in mind, let’s take a look at the model David Byrne has been working on for the past several years. He does things himself and uses his website as his sales and communication vehicle and tool. He and Segmeister won a Grammy this year for packaging while he will be premiering his latest concert flick at SXSW this March (Ride, Rise, Roar). His journal continues to enlighten and educate while he spends $2000 dollars in royalty fees every month in order to offer listeners his streaming radio station. While others point to the obvious (the looming demise of corporate radio and CD commercialism/retail) David Byrne continues to simply take action by doing it. Like it or not, he refuses to be left behind. A philanthropist, artist, ally, activist, writer, and musician he gets it and gets it done while we all seem to satisfied to sit on the side lines and complain about the massiveness of the machine as the stadiums and arenas continue to fill their seats with musical “acts” and sporting “events”… Stop making sense, David, Stop Making Sense. February 25, 2010 at 4:31 am #42409TOverbyParticipantAll well and good. However this thread was a discussion about Live Nation/Ticektmaster and not about David Byrne and how much you love him. But since you’re here:
“Wow, I am always amazed by the amount of energy and shock that are reflected whenever individuals talk about Ticketmaster fees, et al. As if something can be done in face of millions of dollars and acres of corruption. As if”.
SO LET ME +MAKE SURE I HAVE THIS RIGHT- WHAT YOU’RE SAYING IS– DAMN WE CAN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT TICKETMASTER SO LET’S DISCUSS HOW IF YOU COULD, YOU’D HAVE DAVID BYRNE’S BABY.“let’s take a look at the model David Byrne has been working on for the past several years”.
OK-LET’S TAKE A LOOK“He does things himself and uses his website as his sales and communication vehicle and tool”
WHAT ARTIST DOESN’T USE HIS WEBSITE AS A COMMUNICATION VEHICLE AND TOOL?“He and Segmeister won a Grammy this year for packaging”
CONGRATULATIONS TO HIM –HE OBVIOUSLY DID A GREAT JOB OF HIRING SEGMEISTER THE DESIGNER.“While others point to the obvious (the looming demise of corporate radio and CD commercialism/retail) David Byrne continues to simply take action by doing it”.
DOING WHAT EXACTLY? BILLING A BOOK TOUR AS A CONCERT AND THEN CHARGING $30 FOR PEOPLE TO HEAR HIM TALK FOR 15 MINUTES ABOUT BICYCLING AROUND THE GREAT CITIES OF THE WORLD?AND THEN HE STOOD BY AND HAD TWO OTHER PEOPLE PRESENT A SLIDE SHOW FOR THE NEXT HOUR AND A HALF. COULDN’T EVEN DO THAT HIMSELF. HOW ARTSY -MAYBE WE SHOULD HAVE LUCINDA DO A SLIDE SHOW ABOUT WALKING AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD.“A philanthropist, artist, ally, activist, writer, and musician he gets it and gets it done”
HE ALSO PROMISED A ONE-ON-ONE Q & A SESSION AT THE END OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED “SHOW”, BUT THE OTHER TWO PEOPLE TOOK SO LONG THAT HE TOLD THE AUDIENCE HE DIDN’T HAVE TIME FOR IT AND LEFT -HOW PHILANTHROPIC OF HIM
AND IF YOU WANT TO READ ABOUT HOW MISLEADING HIS FANS TOUGHT THIS “SHOW” WAS YOU CAN CLICK ON THE LINK ON HIS WEBSITE AND IT TAKES YOU TO TICKETMASTER.COM WHERE YOU CAN SEE HOW THRILLED HIS ALLIES/FANS WERE THAT THEY SHOWED FOR MUSIC AND GOT A SLIDE SHOW. REMINDS OF THE TIME MANY YEARS AGO WHEN HE PLAYED ON A SHOW AT THE GUTHRIE THEATER IN MPLS WITH PHILIP GLASS AND THE ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO. AS THE HEADLINER HE CAME OUT AND PLAYED TWO WOOD STICKS FOR 15 MINUTES AND LEFT. NOT KIDDING.“we all seem to satisfied to sit on the side lines and complain about the massiveness of the machine as the stadiums and arenas continue to fill their seats with musical “acts” and sporting “events”
AND SLIDE SHOWS“Stop making sense, David, Stop Making Sense”
FUNNY -YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH“Link here for his latest movie trailer and more –> http://www.rideriseroar.com/”
GO DAVID! GO BYRNE! GO DAVID BYRNE! RA RA RA
DO YOU GO ON HIS SITE AND PROMOTE LUCINDA? OH, WAIT I FORGOT HE DOESN’T HAVE A FAN FORUM. I GUESS HE’S TO BE BUSY BEING A PHILANTHROPIST, ARTIST, ALLY, ACTIVIST, WRITER, AND MUSICIAN (FUNNY HOW YOU LISTED MUSICIAN LAST) TO LISTEN TO HIS FANS.
APPARENTLY HE’S ALSO HIRED YOU TO USE OTHER ARTISTS WEBSITES AS COMMUNICATION VEHICLES TOOLS. I HOPE HE’S PAYING YOU WELL.AS I MENTIONED AT THE TOP -THIS TOPIC WAS ABOUT TICKETMASTER AND LIVE NATION AND UNLESS I MISREAD I DON’T SEE ANYWHERE ABOVE WHERE YOU MENTION HOW DAVID BYRNE ADDRESSED THE TM/LN ISSUE. DID I MISS THAT. SO IF YOU DON’T MIND, I WILL BRING THIS BACK ON TOPIC BY REMINDING YOU THAT IT WAS LUCINDA, WITH THE MERCH CREDIT TO OFFSET THE TM FEES, WHO IS STILL THE ONLY ARTIST I KNOW OF TO EVEN MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO ADDRESS THE EGREGIOUS BEHAVIOR OF TM/LN (AND YES I REMEMBER PEARL JAM). SHE ALSO HAD THE BALLS TO ISSUE A NATIONAL PRESS RELEASE TO SAY SHE WAS DOING IT. BUT WE DIDN’T REALLY THINK TM/LN WOULD GET PISSED, BECAUSE AFTER ALL, IT WAS COMING OUT OF HER OWN POCKET. AND WHILE IT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MUCH (WHICH WE STATED IN THE PRESS RELEASE), I THINK THAT ACTION ALONE WAS FAR MORE “DOING IT” THAN ANYTHING YOU CREDITED DAVID BYRNE WITH.
I HOPE YOU DON’T TAKE ANY OF THIS PERSONAL BUT IT JUST KINDA ANNOYS ME WHEN YOU HIJACK A THREAD JUST TO TELL US ALL HOW MUCH BIG LOVE YOU HAVE FOR DAVID BYRNE. ESPECIALLY WHEN, IN THE PAST YOU’VE COME IN HERE AND ACCUSED LUCINDA’S FAN’S OF BEING CHEERLEADERS. SHEESH, PUT YOUR DB POM POM’S DOWN AND LOOK IN THE MIRROR.
OH YEAH, FOR THE RECORD, I AM A DAVID BYRNE FAN.February 25, 2010 at 10:03 am #42408DavidinMaineParticipantThanks, for sharing your perspectives, Tom–nothing personal taken–necessary forum discourse. In fact, nothing personal coming at you either.
That aside, I always enjoy it when someone’s shift key gets stuck and a thread comes out all caps. Etiquette aside (all caps = yelling, right), I am confident that your intention was to indeed do just that, yet your content was less then thrilling. Having db’s baby, really, is that all you got–nothing about my mother or gender or sexuality, etc? And why take such a line of offense and offensive tone? Actually, I only saw one show of his past tour because that’s all it took–in other words, I was not a huge appreciator of the tour. Yeah, everyone uses the Internet to communicate but few use it as effectively as db in terms of selling everything and communicating efficiently. In addition, he doesn’t “hire,” he collaborates with individuals (nice concept, collaboration). After all, he has been doing special packaging for over 25-years (180-gram vinyl is not-so-special packaging).
Curiously enough, I wonder why you discount and sweep these and other issues so swiftly and vigorously under the proverbial rug. Boy howdy, the writing is on the wall (dude)–record companies, newspapers, and corporate radio didn’t pay attention and now are slowly running out of life on the side of the road (no pun intended!). Kinda like Circuit City and others, right? Yeah, the hard truth is that there is nothing anybody can do about Ticketmaster ‘cept supporting the things like db and the local clubs like Space, One Longfellow Square, Stone Mountain Arts Center, and Port City Music Hall (all Portland Area) do; all have made a go of it without heavy fees and Ticketmaster.
Anyway, nice shooting Tex and remember, it really is hard to read all caps–it’s much easier using appropriate and accurate diction versus simply yelling. And if you want to have this be a cheerleaders only forum with you as the faithful leader and then we can all take a treasure-bath, go for it. I, too, remember many terrific shows in MPLS including db’s Monster in the Mirrow tour, a few LW’s tours with Gurf “Beer Bottle” on guit, and many more. Great memories and sorry yours aren’t so terrific. From what it appears, it sure sounds like you just finished reading Sarah Palin’s latest “book,” which inspired you to go all rouge-y. Finally, I was not trying to highjack this thread rather, I simply did not buy or appreciate the line of BS that you were trying to sell… Kinda like buying a pig with glasses–it’s still just a pig (without lipstick of course!).
March 2, 2010 at 3:33 pm #42410bobParticipantThe only thing more annoying that caps is using a colored font…or bringing politics into the mix…Troll
March 3, 2010 at 4:43 pm #42411tntracyParticipantDavidinMaine – As moderator, I deleted your previous post in this thread. Not only did it have absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand, but it was a blatant attempt to stir up unnecessary controversy by being blatantly political and provocative.
Please discontinue your trolling in this forum.
Tom
March 3, 2010 at 5:20 pm #42412tonygKeymasterI think you did the right thing Tom. That post was not appropriate for this forum.
March 4, 2010 at 2:14 am #42413DavidinMaineParticipantHmmm… Moderator, really? Glad we can just eliminate postings from the forum. Wow. What is that considered in other areas of our world? Freedom of speech perhaps, there TNT. My last post must have been very close to the bone to be eliminated–hiding something perhaps, Hannity? Oh yeah, there is so much traffic in here for you to “moderate.”… (insert crickets) Furthermore, the interchange with TO above was/is much more colorful/controversial than the post that you deleted (in my opinion) so your little stake in the sand “moderator I can so I will” tirade is that much more cute. (p.s. I think that the picture you have as your moniker/avitar in terms of LW is really bad–but that’s just me).
March 4, 2010 at 4:39 am #42414tonygKeymasterHe isn’t hiding anything. He explained why your post was deleted.
Traffic comes to a halt once you post because most people don’t want to feed the troll. It only encourages you to express yourself further in your long winded, self-important, arrogant, and insulting way.
Ask yourself why you have decided to be a dick.
March 4, 2010 at 5:02 am #42415tntracyParticipantDiM, DiM, DiM. I had previously assumed, obviously incorrectly, that you were a rather educated person. “Freedom of speech?” Really? Any student of basic civics and the American Constitution can tell you that the First Amendment to the Constitution –
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
– prohibits Congress (i.e., the Legislative Branch of our Federal Government) from restricting free speech. And, DiM old chap, the last time I checked the Federal Government is not administering this forum! 😆
And, Hannity? Really?!? I could not care less about Mr. Hannity; Ms. Palin as well. Nor, your thoughts on them. Talk about boring!
I removed your post because:
a) it was COMPLETELY off topic. If we must draw parallels between your post & TOverby’s above, his was on topic. Emphatically so! Yours had nothing to do with the Ticketmaster / Live Nation merger, nor how artists are (or, in the case of your beloved Mr. Byrne, are NOT) attempting to address the issue by providing some economic relief to fans.
b) Mostly, though, it was provocative (i.e., you were “trolling” – as in “fishing” – for an emotional response from others in the forum) and politically controversial. Regarding the later, apparently in your haste to cause controversy & draw attention to yourself, you failed to notice that this is not a political forum, my DiM friend. It is a music forum, about Lucinda Williams’ music more specifically, as well as other artists in the Americana / Folk / Alt-Country vein. If you want to discuss politics, there are a myriad of other forums on the Internet for political discussion where you would assuredly find a more receptive audience. Your bringing up such topics here, on the other hand, was a blatant attempt at eliciting an emotional response from other members here – blatant in that, after your “tirade” about Mr. Hannity & Ms. Palin, you provided the following as an epilogue:
Come to think of it, I wonder how many cheerleaders are republican [sic] and listeners of Shawn [sic] Hannity? [Emphasis added]
The operative word here being cheerleaders – the term you so often use derisively to refer to the Lu fans here who come to her defense (Surprise! That is, after all, the name of the forum!). This was all obviously intended to call out any and all “Repugs” for a good ol’ fashioned “flame war” (a heated Internet forum verbal fight) – something else moderators “moderate.”
c) Finally, your snotty little picture of a “troll” with the street vernacular caption “Don’t hate the player, hate the game…” This was a blatant admission on your part that you are well aware of your trolling activities, and are, in fact, rubbing everyone’s collective noses in it.
So, DiM, these are the reasons I deleted your post. Not because I wanted to set “a little stake in the sand”, or be “cute.” I am simply trying to ask you to PLEASE stop CONSTANTLY striving to cause controversy & elicit emotional responses in our “Friendly Forum.”
You see, DiM, everyone else besides you comes here to share information & enjoy a little camaraderie with like-minded music fans. In contrast, your constant, incessant (intentionally redundant for emphasis!) trolling detracts from that, as few & far between as we “crickets” may be. So, please refrain. Can ya? Puh-leeze?
Tom
P.S. Oh, and my previous post about deleting your trolling a “tirade?” Really? All three sentences? 😆 😆 😆
P.S.S. DiM, based on your posting history, you are obviously extremely knowledgeable about music! If you would concentrate on sharing such knowledge with the other members of the forum in a non-confrontational manner, rather than always attempting to “hook” others into combative verbal tit-for-tats, how refreshing that would be!
March 4, 2010 at 10:19 am #42416DavidinMaineParticipantOK, OK, Tom, I do wish I could say that I appreciate your long lecture-like attempt to address, what you see as inappropriate words and pictures that I entered here in this forum–def. a place for open discussion. All the silly emoticons (adults use words) and vernacular (puh-leeze), the heart of the matter is that different opinions and views exist outside of the “we” you speak of. I prefer “I” statements because I can only speak for myself. When you speak of the collective we, it only shows the group-think, bully mentality that sometimes exists in this forum, which is very clear in the long history of posts. Finally, provoking individuals in this forum would be like shooting fish in a barrel. As a presupposition, it is very, very–actually all to clear, in terms of what a bunch of exposed nerves several of you are in here. Wow, really, is a good way of looking it! Eliminating a post and then prattling on about why you did so…hmmm. This forum is kinda like a trout farm of hyper-sensitive LWs fans but do what you like ’cause it’s your forum. I don’t care who it is or what the line is, if I see a line of BS I will call you out. Take Tony’s troll imagery from above. I thought you were talking about trolling as in fishing. Is that on topic Mr. Speaker? How many more Mr. Speaker, how many more??? Oh yeah, I don’t see db as “beloved” so I would appreciate that you not put words in my mouth. But, thank you for trying all the same. I view many musicians as accomplished with pre-Essence LW being in my top 10 of about 150 or so… Enjoy the day as winter starts to turn towards spring. Oh yeah, I will let you and Tony-G if he is there, buy me a pint the next time we meet up before a show.
March 4, 2010 at 3:16 pm #42417tonygKeymasterThis is what happens when you try to reason with this guy. 🙄
