On a recent “Off The Record” show on WFPK-FM Louisville (MP3 / podcast can be downloaded here), Dawn Landes cited Lu as being one of the five women performers over the five decades of the 50’s through the 90’s who have most inspired her, ‘”Lafayette” in particlular.
Of the song, Ms. Landes speaks the longest & in the most glowing terms (IMHO), saying,
This one’s from the 90’s, and it’s Lucinda Williams, who’s one of my all-time favorite songwriters. Sometimes you hear a song and you just immediately want to pick up your guitar and figure out what’s going on there. You just want it running through your head all the time and this song’s like that song for me. It’s called “Lafayette.”
The melody on this song really sticks in your head. It’s almost like a child’s rhyme or something – it makes you feel good to have it stuck in your head.
She produced this record herself, or co-produced it with someone. I mean, I think she paid for everything herself and that’s, I really admire that in anybody who just has some art to make and they just go and make it, you know. I’ve been like that with my own career and I really admire that in other people, too – you’ve got something to say, just find a way to say it. It’s a great sounding recording, too – she’s just very free.

P.S. As an aside, on the show Ms. Landes also mentions “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind” by Dolly Parton & Chet Atkins & that she had the pleasure of recently recording this song with Justin Townes Earle. Well, I had the pleasure of hearing them both sing it live a couple of weeks ago when I saw Dawn open for Justin…
