We saw Justin Townes Earle tonight at our favorite little music venue in Atlanta, Eddie’s Attic. As Justin would say, “Oh my damn!” What a fantastic & incredibly entertaining show!
I must admit that my primary reason for going to this show was to see Justin’s opening act, Dawn Landes. I had recently discovered her (thanks to another thread in this forum, and snapped up all of her albums. Loving what I heard, when I saw she was playing at Eddie’s Attic, I bought tickets.
Now, I had heard of Justin Townes Earle & knew he was Steve Earle’s son, but had never listened to his music. Wanting to hear him for the first time live with no preconceived notions, I purposely did not check him out on the Internet & did not get either of his first two albums. I went in “blind” so to speak. Man, was I blown away! Not only did we love his brand of toe-tapping honky-tonk & ol’ time country (with some blues thrown in to boot!), but he also possesses a laugh-out-loud stage persona that is highly entertaining. (One of his many great lines between songs tonight was, “Now, I’ve been known to write songs for young ladies who do not appreciate them.”) He was accompanied on stage by an incredible fiddle player, Joshua Hedley, and a female upright bass player, Bryn Davies. They all put on a great show, we had a great time, and I left the show a Justin Townes Earle fan! (I just ordered both his CDs…)
I also just found a Justin Townes Earle blog, “Halfway to Jackson”, and discovered a link on it to an Internet Archive of his show three nights ago in Knoxville, TN! The setlist looks very close (if not the same) as tonight’s, and I am downloading the files as I type this. So, if you’re unfamiliar with Justin’s music like I was before tonight, check him out!

P.S. Another cool part of the evening was Justin announcing that his father Steve had won a Grammy tonight for Best Contemporary Folk Album & congratulating him from the stage…
P.S.S. There is also a link on that blog to an Internet Archive of his show four nights ago in Nashville, TN…

February 1, 2010 at 6:19 pm #42223tntracyParticipantThanks, tonyg – it WAS a fun evening. So fun, in fact, I’d do it again in a heartbeat tonight if I could! For y’all there in the LA area, looks like he’ll be playing at Echo on February 11th, with an in-store appearance at Amoeba Records in Hollywood the day before…
There was at least one deviation last night from Justin’s setlists in Nashville & Knoxville (see links above). He played a cover of the Buck Owens’ classic “Close Up The Honky Tonks”. Here is a YouTube video I found of him performing it at Bonnaroo last year. It’ll give anyone unfamiliar w/ JTE a little taste of his on-stage personality & banter…

February 1, 2010 at 10:13 pm #42224tonygKeymasterGreat! I am already booked the night of the 11th; James McMurty at The Mint in LA. The night before is another Doug Pettibone show in Ventura. And the night after will be james McMurtry again at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. Opening for James both nights is Jonny Burke, formerly of the Dedringers.
This will be folowed by many nights of going to bed early. 😆

Awesome and awesome. One, you’re posting to Lu’s website from the bar/venue? I’m 😮 and impressed :D. Two, I meant to post the other day I listened to some of the album from the link you provided. I must put this on my list of CD’s to acquire.

Yup. Free Wi-Fi at SOB + my iPod Touch = posting from the venue!
Good JTE show tonight. The place was packed (less the 3 extremely drunk & obnoxious frat boys who were SCREAMING obscenities for some unknown reason at the top of their lungs both between & during songs & who were summarily “bounced” 20 minutes into JTE’s set… 🙄 ). Justin was as entertaining as ever. Always a good show…

December 15, 2010 at 3:53 pm #42233tntracyParticipantTo quote another famous son, “it’s a family tradition.” JTE is back on the road after some jail time and a voluntary stint in rehab (the precipitating incident occurred 5 days after we saw him here in Atlanta on 9/11).
My favorite quote from the article: “I don’t get disappointed when I do fuck up, because that’s my natural state.” 😆

December 15, 2010 at 3:57 pm #42234tonygKeymasterSorry to hear another good artist is going down the wrong road to wreck and ruin. 😥
December 15, 2010 at 4:06 pm #42235tntracyParticipantYeah tonyg, it’s unfortunate. But at least he recognizes he has a problem, and at a relatively young age at that…
