Stoll Vaughan is a singer/songwriter I met in 2005. He opened the Mellencamp/Fogerty tour in support of his freshman record. He went from playing a bar of 50 people to opening the Mellencamp show in Cincinnati, 14,000 fans, and I was fortunate enough to have been in the audience.
He has since released his third record, which was charting on The Americana Music Charts in the top 40 for several weeks if not several months. He has since fallen off the top 40.
He is opening for The Band of Heathens this Saturday, and has had some notable opening appearances with James McMurtry, Marty Stuart, and Shooter Jennings (who referred to him as Stollie :lol:). Mainstream opening acts included Mellencamp and Def Leppard.
Stoll has actually been compared to Dylan and Townes Van Zandt (some say he resembles Townes), but I really think the term should be likened to, not compared.

I took a little road trip to hear Stoll on Saturday and he stopped by before his set and asked my friend and I some songs we would like to hear him play. I told him I loved “War On Love.” I started videotaping just as Stoll gave me a shout out before playing this song. He was playing solo acoustic as opening act for “The Band Of Heathens.”

I have to say, though, that I just can’t stand people chatting away while someone is performing! It was particularly noticeable (and irritating as hell) on the quieter number, “War On Love”. Does it bother you as much as it does me? It’s rude to the performer, and it’s rude to others who are there to listen & try to get lost in the music. A big reason why I love Eddie’s Attic here in Atlanta (Decatur, actually) is because before every show, when announcing the acts, the owner asks everyone to please be quiet during the performances (and, there is a sign by the stage that “suggests” those who want to “party” go to a separate enclosed patio where the show is broadcast on closed circuit television).

Yes, Tom, I noticed the chatter while I was taping and watching as well. It is annoying and I was sort of surprised to hear all the noise. Stoll’s hometown is Lexington, where the show was held, and I thought everyone would be more attentive. However, it was a billiards place in front, big ass room with a stage in the back.
Stoll has played Eddie’s Attic in the past. Isn’t Eddie’s considered a “listening room?”

Yes, definitely. A big reason why it’s my favorite little venue in Atlanta.
I’ll have to look for Stoll to come back through town & go give him a listen!

Stoll is really quite rounded , I think, for being so young, as far as his influences go. He cites Townes VZ, Bill Monroe, John Prine and even Elvis and is a big big fan of James McMurtry.
Stoll has a great story about another influence. In an On Air interview, Stoll talks about walking into Douglas Corner in Nashville to see Ramblin Jack play and there is only about 7 people in the room. He said he spots Ramblin sitting at the bar drinking. He walks over and proceeds to talk to him for about 15 minutes. He said he turned around to see Guy Clark and John Prine standing there, laughs saying he knew then and there his conversation with Ramblin’ was over. He goes on to say about 15 people showed up to hear Ramblin and 2 of those 15 people were legends themselves. He claims to this day Douglas Corner is one of his favorite places for that reason alone.
Stoll came through my neck of the woods last week, playing a singer songwriter round with two local musicians. This was probably one of my more favorite Stoll Vaughan shows. Here is a little gospel tune he wrote, has never recorded, but I hope he does soon. The lighting is terrible in the video but the sound is decent.

BTW, tnt…Stoll is coming to Eddie’s Attic on May 22. I would seriously consider traveling to your beloved state but the timing is not working in my favor.

Stoll covering “Angel From Montgomery” and “Jolene” at a tribute music festival in Florida. Dang, I’ve never heard him do cover songs from such great artists, I need to fine tune my requests!
Stoll delivers a plaintitive, haunting rendition of “Two Hands” by TVZ at a Bloomington bar. The striking thing, to me, that’s going on in this video is the complete audience silence. Okay, so the audience was minimal, two other bands on the bill were in the room along with a handful of very close friends of Stoll’s, myself and a few friends. HOWEVER, on several other songs during his set, several people in the room were talking very loudly. Not so on this song. This rendition is very different than the one I posted earlier in the thread.

I just discovered a song from Stoll’s second record was featured on “True Blood,” the premiere show. “Between You And I” is a great storyteller song. Now we have a Stoll and Lu connection, kinda, sorta.

I saw Stoll Vaughan live at Eddie’s Attic last night with Friendly Forum member Lafayette, who drove all the way to Atlanta from Cincinnati just for this show (& to surprise Stoll, which was priceless! The look on his face when he saw her sitting front & center was awesome!).

Thanks so much for opening your home, attending Stoll’s show, and helping me pull off the surprise! It was priceless. It was a great night of music and we met a new friend, the former owner of Hemingway’s in Marietta.

tnt…You are truly “blessed” (rhymes with “West” 😀 ) having such a cool music venue, a great listening room AKA Eddie’s Attic, as you have often said, so very near your home. I never realized the quality of that room until I started listening to Stoll’s performance while uploading on YouTube.
This is the first time I’ve seen him play a ukulele. Very cool for me. A new song to boot.
