Lucinda performing “Difficult Child,” a song she wrote specifically for the Janis Joplin Tribute show at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, OH, in honor of the memory of Janis Joplin. Apologies for the audio reverb.

She had started to write it last week but then decided it wasn’t going to be ready, but at rehearsal there was a miscommunication about what the 3rd Janis song she wanted to do was going to be and the band was not prepared for the song that she wanted to do. At that point started to work on the new one again and she was literally writing it in the dressing room right up until it was time to go onstage. She only let me in to hear it for the first time five minutes before going to the stage, and wanted to know if I thought she should do it–yes definitely–so she very quickly had to rewrite the lyrics on to one page because she had them on different scraps of paper. In fact she didn’t have to time to write out all the verses so she left one verse out. By this time the stage manager is standing outside the dressing room getting a little nervous. While still a work in progress–there will be at least two verses and the title has been changed to Port Arthur — I thought it sounded great and was really glad she got it done given that Janis’s brother and sister were there and I know they really appreciated it-as did the people from the RRHOF.

November 18, 2009 at 6:01 am #41592LafayetteParticipantI knew this song was going to be special when she started to introduce it and I was getting nervous about capturing the entire song as my camera card was quite full. I had spent part of the show deleting photos I knew I had already transferred to my hard drive but still was not quite sure I had the room (sometimes it is just hard for me to delete photos 😯 😆 ). However, it all worked out and I captured the song in it’s entirety and didn’t have to blurt any expletives because the song was cut off 😆 .
I hope we get to hear an updated version of “Port Arthur” at some point! I think it was just a wonderful tribute to Janis and the fact that Lu wrote this song under what certainly seemed to be extreme duress, and came up with such a gem, speaks volumes about Lu and what moves her.

November 19, 2009 at 5:11 pm #41595LafayetteParticipantShazaam! I had someone contact me via my YouTube account asking if I had any additonal footage of the Joplin tribute, they had apparently searched and found my Lu uploads. I just checked the view count, and for Port Arthur (the former Difficult Child) the view count is over 1,800 in less than 2 days. “Ball and Chain” view count is holding around 93 views.

Looking forward to the final version.

November 23, 2009 at 6:03 am #41598LafayetteParticipantlwj, My camera is a Kodak Easy Share. Nothing significant. I’m just a point and shoot kind of gal and this camera works for me!
November 23, 2009 at 7:34 pm #41599stogerParticipantPoint and shoot, indeed: she was seated next to me, but fortunately kept the lens trained straight ahead on the stage rather than laterally. You go Lafayette!
