In the past couple of weeks Lu has been busy -I guess we just can’t give her a break 🙂
She did a wonderful duet with the legendary Jimmy Webb on his song Galveston. He is finishing up an album of duets. We just got the finished version and Jimmy was so thrilled with it he is saying it may be the single.
A few days after that she also sang harmony on a song for Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, which is her longtime friend Colin Linden’s side band.
And this past Saturday a film crew came to the house and filmed Lu for a documentary about legendary delta blues singer Honeyboy Edwards. He is 94 years old and is still touring -in fact he is playing Cozy’s Blues club in LA on 1/15 & 16. As you might imagine he has an amazing story-for example he was with Robert Johnson the night he was poisoned in 1938. Anyway, Lu talked about Honeyboy -but she also talked a lot about the blues which is a topic she loves to talk about.
In addition to Lu, the movie will also include Keith Richards, BB King and Billy Gibbons among others.

I’ve discovered a lot of blues musicians though her covers over the years.Absolutely cool! I love exploring the blues as well, and between John Mellencamp, Lu, and Alex Dixon ( Willie Dixon’s grandson), I, too, have discovered a genre I never thought would interest me. Actually, as the story goes, I would have never discovered Lu had it not been for Mellencamp’s blues and Americana cover record in 2003.
She will almost definitely do a blues album someday, it is something she has been wanting to do for a long time–but it will not be this next record.

Cool – I’d love that, too. Remind Lu about the “Juke Joint Blues” CD collection I gave her in NYC – I think she’d be able to find a great song or two to cover off of that… 😉

I will be waiting with bated breath to hear her song choices if and when she decides to go forward with her wish to do a blues record.

Lucinda Williams, Shelby Lynne, Emmylou Harris and Jessi Colter are all featured on Tony Joe White’s new album, due Sept. 28. The Heroines is White’s first U.S. studio album in six years and his first for Sanctuary Records. “I had known these women for a long time,” says White, “and they’ve all been like heroes to me through the years.” White’s daughter Michelle also guests on the album. White is best known for writing “Polk Salad Annie” and the Brook Benton hit “Rainy Night in Georgia.”And here is the song called “Closing in on the Fire”

Here is a link to a clip of the movie— http://www.honeyboyfilm.comTom, in checking out that link, it appears that movie has been out a while (DVDs are available for order, a list of awards is on the main page, and the film synopsis ends with “The film concludes in Chicago, where Edwards, now 87, resides and continues to perform” which would have been about 7 years ago, judging from his current age. Is there a newer movie being made that Lu was interviewed for? I want to be sure & see it, but do not want to spend the $15 on this movie if it is the wrong one…

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings is a Canadian roots music band.
The new album of duets is called “Kings and Queens” and features Lucinda, Emmylou Harris and Serena Ryder.
fall 2010 release date.
