19 It’s a Long Way to the top [Lu says such things DURING it as “this is stupid”; “come see us in a rock club sometime”; “only one person is standing up”; and “we shouldn’t be doing this”]Yes, as SM posted in another stream, Lu “lost her cool” a bit at the end–though I must emphasize that her mood throughout was smiling, sound was good, intros to several songs relatively extended (though not much different from what she has said before). We gave her little energy. No, I wasn’t the lone standee, but I was clapping from row one, to little avail. I think the “shouldn’t be doing this” ultimately referred to the setlist and the fact that she wished she had gone more acoustic this night–rather than to some general statement about not performing or whatnot. Again, I will emphasize that I deliberately waited her out by the bus because I wanted to kind of apologize for the crowd or house, individually and/or collectively. Devon Sproule opened the show, and we were told the two were visiting inside, so kudos to Ms. Sproule for helping get Lu back in a good mood. The dozen or so people waiting bus side were eventually apologized to by Lu. Of course the majority probably shared the sentiments of the lone woman (no twin phenomenon in this town) next to me who said, near the end of the ACDC song, “what did she expect us to do?” A valid question that, in some sense at least.
I opted out of Buick 6’s set in the name of the sunset outside over the Tyne River. Sorry guys.
Devon Sproule is a great performer, a Virginian who walked on with the word “dang.” Gotta like it. Unfortunately, she’s not opening any more on this run. She had a pair of friends (sisters, though not twins) in the crowd from Virginia, who flew over just to see her this week in UK.
Rumour (note British spelling) has it a guest of not-quite-Boss-proportions-maybe but still, a luminary, will show up at the London show. Apparently Lu’s recording with him next day in studio. Stay tuned.

Thanks, as always, for the set list and thoughtful commentary, stoger. Was going to inject a pithy comment about the unpredictability of concert audiences, but it just ain’t there. Sometimes we all, including Lucinda, just gotta roll with it.
Was at the Sage last night.Thought that the show started well however I feel that 3/4 way through the sound started losing some subtlety and ‘morphed ‘ into rockout territory (Lucinda overly influenced by Buick 6?).As for temper tantrum at end ,she obviously did not read audience (or venue) the Sage is evidently not a rock club and Lucinda unfortunately ended up sounding like a spoilt diva.
hello, I was at the Sage last night and the audience wasn’t what I was expecting, not having seen Lucinda Williams live before or been to many events at the Sage. If I was wondering whether I was at the right gig beforehand then I can understand the musicians feeling a little out of place. It was a great performance though; Buick 6’s instrumental set was a joy of virtuoso rock and anyone who sings like Lucinda Willams you can probably forgive for most other things that might occur on the night. I have to say that the little note of dischord at the end did put a genuine dampener on the mood we left the hall with but at the end of the day this is live music with real people on both sides and if you never wanted to see any friction you’d have to never go out. Best of luck for the rest of your UK dates folks and thanks for some really great music last night.
All this begs the question on why these types of venues were booked for her. I must admit that when I got my ticket for Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on Thursday I was half expecting it to be an acoustic, rather than full electric band, performance.
Its another Sage (a classical music venue) – great for when I saw Costello and the Brodsky Quartet there recently but terrible acoustically whenever I’ve seen anyone whose plugged in. I can’t visualise the audience wigging out in the aisles as she might like in such a formal setting.
Having said all that, I’m really looking forward to it and maybe they’ll re-think the set list in view of the Gateshead experience.

The Sage gig was the first time I had seen Lucinda live,so obviously didn’t know what to expect.Really enjoyed the whole night.I thought Devon Sproule was good,and lets not forget she had already performed on the riverboat earlier in the day.
Buick 6 were probably not to everyones taste,but being a frustrated guitarist,they were to mine.Great last number with Chet on drums,instead of guitar,and Butch on percussion,excellent.
I am sure The Sage can change the seating layout,and create a dance floor at the front,maybe should have done that for Lucinda.On the whole really enjoyed her set,a good selection of her songs.
It really bugs when when people leave during the set,at least stay until the end,you might enjoy it.The Sage management don’t want you hanging around after a gig.Saw Guy Clark,in Hall 2,a couple of years ago and he said they were on an encore curfew,he was only allowed do one song as an encore,and lets face it it’s not cheap to see these people and you can’t see them every other week.Try getting drink at the bar afterwards as well…….well what a grumpy old man I am.
Maybe Lucinda should have played the City Hall…..any thoughts?

Indeed…people around us were rather bemused as they left.
The applause was plentiful and genuine throughout the evening. Just because we don’t all feel the need to get up and dance around the hall doesn’t mean we aren’t thoroughly enjoying the show.
Things had seemed fine right up until the end.
Felt the need to post something somewhere re the show at the Sage on Saturday night.To begin with I thought Lucinda Williams put on an excellent show we had travelled down from Scotland having decided Newcastle would probabally be a better show than Perth Scotland in terms of atmosphere /crowd involvenment oh how wrong I was.In my many years of attending music shows ranging from large festivals /outdoor shows to various indoor events large and small i dont think i can remeber a crowd who were as pathetic as the one i was in the middle of on Saturday night the complete lack of any type of engagement to what was happening on the stage was incredable,we should make no judgements on the perfomer or the venue it is the crowd that make a show really happen or not and this crowd where someting else.I wish I had a camera to capture the looks on the peoples face next to us when we clapped our hands are we not allowed to enjoy ourselves I actually wonderd why some people where actually there due to there complete disinterest to what was being presented to them.Rant over apart from that brilliant gig /brilliant performer.
I was given tickets to see Lucinda by a friend who was had the flu. I own up and say that I had never actually heard of Lucinda Williams before 😳 😳 😳 so had no idea what to expect. Once I had heard a few songs I realised I did know her music and I thought the performance from Lucinda and Buick 6 were absolutely brilliant – especially the drum solos. By the end I really wanted to dance – especially as I was sat right behind about the only person who was! But I found that the gaps in between each song were too long and so the whole ‘build-up’ thing fell flat as soon as each song ended, which was a real shame. Also, I had to laugh as no drinks were allowed in the venue – which is rather grand and prestigious and more geared for more sedate sets I think – so while Lucinda and the Bewicks were happily having their brandies topped up all the way through the set, we could only look on dry-mouthed and stoney faced as they obviously went for it and enjoyed themselves!
is it my impression or in concerts lucinda doesn’t play “are you alright?” often?
i’ve also never seen “mama you sweet” in a setlist.
i find it impossible to believe that the vast majority of those european venues are seated. sitting must be very unconfortable at least in the last 7 or 8 songs of every setlist from this europe tour.

She has played both of these songs. Not sure on frequency, but, yes she has played them. “Mama You Sweet” is a personal song for me.

There are a couple of arenas just a stone’s throw away from the Sage that would’ve been far better. Totally agree that it was a long set and I was uncomfortable and fed up of just politely sitting there, but wasn’t going to stand as people behind me still sitting may not have wanted to see me swaying around in front of them and blocking the view 😮 !

So that was brandy in Lu’s sippy cup? Good eyes. And maybe we can rename the instrumental band “Bewick 6” so as to avoid any overlap with the existing blues band Buick 6 (UK-based, I think).
