A good show, with a setlist adjusted for the seated symphony hall. Very responsive audience, but simply not the buzz of a standing rock club, such as previous night’s Leamington Assembly. Show had a 10:30 PM curfew; then, several fans met with Lucinda at the pink bus near midnight.

Strange waiting by the bus, as a chaffeured car of partially attired young women kept stopping to offer us a 5 pound discount to ride in their limo to their “Gentlemen’s Club”. However, since us “Gentlemen” were only interested in Lucinda, there was “No Sale” on the sidewalk.

    Where are you, stoger???

Thanks for posting the set list.

Lu was on amazing form and the sequence of songs pitched perfectly to allow the seated audience to warm up. She clearly enjoyed digging out some older songs and although Memphis Pearl had a couple of false starts that only added to the increasingly joyous feeling in the opulent and vaulted room.

Lu came across as very human, sometimes in awe of her stellar band and her intros about her early career and experiences in the music business were spontaneous and funny. She wanted to go on, clearly, but 10.30 was the curfew after an 8.38 start.

Eric isn’t Doug but I thought some of the misgivings expressed on this board about him being unable to step back during quiter numbers weren’t borne out and that he played sensitively, with lots of space for Lu to let rip. The sound was perfect and Chet’s pedal steel just soared up to the vast ceiling at times – and the reflective encores were perfectly judged.

An absolutely world class performance – she seemed genuinely humbled by the entire place standing at the end. I was privileged to have seen it.

Paul, you sly dog: you must have circled back to the Big Pink bus area after you lost me, as no “partially attired young women” materialized in my late evening at all. A dilemma indeed it would have been, though what does the Stephen Stills song advise us on this matter? Gentleman’s club? Hmh. I settled for a drink at the Monroe Guesthouse bar, my humble abode, 3 photos of Marilyn in my room alone. Scant temptation there.

Butts, good comments, yes–“Memphis Pearl” was a bit rough out of the gate. Songs two three and four are, along with “Crescent City” and “If Wishes Were Horses,” my favorite ones for Lu to play live, so what a joy. It took her a few moments to be convinced that she doesn’t play guitar on “I Just Wanted to See you so Bad.” Ray Lamontagne was mentioned in front of “Fruits,” and what a surprise to hear “Metal Firecracker” just when the standard rocker portion of the set seemed to have kicked in. She reflected a lot on her eclectic roots prior to that song. In front of “Bleeding fingers” she acknowledged her guitar maker, James Broussard (sp?) from France, now living in LA. The last four songs comprised two and two, single and double encore, “Bus” and “Overtime” by request.

Paul, I’m catching a train out of Manchester EnglandEngland soon, so I’ll see you at a certain gentleman’s club in Scotland.

Thanks for setlist…amazing show again, but I too thought Eric wasn’t Doug…he was better!! Had moments of moaning feedback reminding me of Richard Thompson’s Stratwork.

Who is Eric anyway? Anyone got any info, I missed his surname when introductions happened.

Keeping me hanging on until the bitter end for Overtime was cruel, but I had tears is my eyes as I left the hall. Inspired.

Just one downside, the drunken, attention-seeking clown sat in the row in front! Why does he think I’ve paid 25 quid to LW? To listen to his inebriated rantings to his Mrs? I think not…. if you’re on here you need to grow up my friend, I think you were outvoted 🙂

Thanks for the comments, gents. I do like the looks of that set list.

(I always take wiki with a grain of salt – – you’d think ES’s joining up with LW would’ve been mentioned by now by some “expert.”)

First time I have seen Lucinda live, despite having been a fan for a number of years now. It was well worth the the wait, she was absolutely fantastic in Manchester last night. The best show I have seen all year. I was a bit apprehensive as she seemed a little uncertain at the start but soon got into her stride. The cowd just lapped it up and she really seemed to appreceate the warmth. The Bridgewater crowd can be a bit stiff sometimes, mainly due to the rigid sit down policy employed by the stewards. Last night we were all just putty in her hands and it was briiliant. Can’t wait for her to return and hopefully play ‘Real Love’

Great night, great band, great sound 10/10

Tom Overby explain here about Eric Shermerhorn.

I remember Eric at the backstage in Zaragoza trying to teach me his last name. 😀 😀 😀

Thanks for the setlist, Paul. I could remember the tracks but not the order.

I agree about the all-seating venue affecting the show a little. It does mean that the audience can be subdued. Fortunately I think the gig took off when the band really hit its stride a third through, warming the crowd up. And great to here the slower numbers more interspersed than elsewhere on the tour.

Lucinda was in great voice, I felt. The band too seemed in good spirits. By the end everyone was on their feet and got back Lu and the band back for two encores. Is this usual, since I thought they only come back once usually and play Long Way…

It was my priviledge to meet Lu outside after the gig. Waited about hour and a half as the temperature dropped but was warmed up by her once she came out. She chatted extensively, including about wanting to do an album of little-heard of covers. Can’t wait! We even got to kiss her on the cheek – we were all guys waiting for her.

Did not get to speak to you, Paul, but I remeber the lass with the blonde hair. very distracting. Hello
to the Mackem and his wife (hope you got home safely), Henry and Rod. I enjoyed meeting other obsessives in the world of Lu. I was the guy in the red shirt.

I’ve been a big admirer of Lu’s for many years but my wife never really got it until she came along to see Lu for the first time on Thursday. Granted we had really good seats and that helps. I’m delighted because she loved it! It’s going to be so much easier getting extended in house airplay for lu’s work now Sheena digs Lu too.

Picking up on the ‘new’ guitarist Lu said he played for Iggy Pop. Well that figures cos he really rocked.. albeit at times he rolled around a bit too much. From where we were sat his amps were raised too loud and overwhelmed some of the tunes.. but hey what a sound. Tribute to all the players bar none. A great band.. no doubt. Live at Fillimore is my fave live album OF ALL TIME even beats Bruce live at Madison Square Garden and Frampton Comes Alive.

I could have sat and swayed for another hour or two. But would have much preferred to have stood and waved. Granted everyone needs their beauty sleep. None of us are getting any younger. Check out the old die hards sat to to the left..that was you guys!!! 😉

Sorry Bridgewater Hall peeps but please resist temptation. Saw Steve Earle last time out and like Lu on Thursday, this venue just isn’t dirty enough. To plush to sterile. Classical or Jazz for sure. Saw Lu at the Apollo a few years back and it worked for me!

If Lu or any of the guys are reading thanks for a great night of musicianship.. great songwriter great singer that’s what she is!

Bigsubi– Eric’s name is Schermerhorn, and you can click on Lefty’s wikipedia link to get all of his info. He has played with Iggy, David Bowie, The The as well as Seal and They Might Be Giants.
He has a son named Wolf, as in Howlin’ Wolf, which tells you a lot about his musical tastes. He has fit in great, Lu loves him and I think you’re just beginning to hear him put his own stamp on some of the songs, as witnessed by his great solo on Essence which someone called “arabesque”. He has a great stylistic range that will be great to hear emerge going forward.
