Just a quick note to forward along a few insights regarding RLs two night stand in Ptld. Interestingly enough DP does not seem to be part of the touring outfit at this point–bummer. Nonetheless, RLs band is outstanding and now features his latest studio chumlies that include guitarist Eric Haywood, bassist Jennifer Condos and drummer Jay Belleros (just back from a tour with Alison Krauss and Robert Plant). Jay is an incredible drummer who reminds me of the infamous Jim Keltner in terms of his skill and interpretations. Unbelievable, really. RL is a true American treasure–his stunningly original voice, sharp guitar work, story telling songs, and abilities to “play” a band are really fun to watch. Hats-off to his crew for putting together an outstandingly simple stage–including the lights–along with a hair-trigger sound set-up. Rocking and loud, when it was needed and sensitive acoustic (solo) pick-ups on the other side of the continuum. Terrific show. The Merrill, although a tough room to dial in when it is half-full, is always a thrill during a full-house as there are plenty of soft bodies to keep the sound from bouncing around the room…
