One of my favorite Lucinda live recordings is the version of “Joy” on the limited edition CD made from the 2007 concert in LA . I don’t know how much of that was arranged (I suppose it’s possible that Jim Morrison sitting in for a few bars in the extended jam was something other than the moment at work), but the elaborations beyond the song as originally cut come across as mostly spontaneous and inspired improvisations.
I’d love to hear more extended versions of other songs and, after hearing the instrumental set that the 2009 Buick 6 delivered in Austin last month, I’ll bet they would be fantastic.
