24 It’s a Long Way to the Top. . . .Wow, when’s the last time your favorite artist’s first eight songs of a live set contained NOTHING from any of his/her LAST FOUR studio records? Or thirteen songs pass before a selection from the current release gets performed? Well, anyway, another great night at La Zona Rosa (see songs which mention La Zona Rosa by Duane Jarvis and by Bill Chambers). Everything’s clicking. Even the merch is moving, as I confirmed in a chat with the lovely Jenna (or is it Janna?), new employee. And yes, Lefty, Erika was there, though looking in disguise (glasses, etc.). Tim, hope you’ll catch up with some tour dates soon. What else to say? Houston ho. . .

Lu get over here soon please, pretty please.. 😆I’ll confess that I’m a recently converted Lucinda Williams fan. I don’t have really a good excuse because I’m her age and have lived in Austin all my life. Although it took a while, here I am. That said, I was really impressed by what a strong show she put on at La Zona Rosa here on Friday.
I’d been listening to the LA and NY concert recordings from 2007 and was, I suppose, expecting some of their “welcome to the rehearsal” moments (which, I’ll also admit, I find actually pretty engaging). What we got in Austin was a very strong performance without a single such moment that I can recall. The energy level was high and the sequence of the setlist only amped that up.
This was an fantastic show! I came down from Stillwater Oklahoma early Friday. Got into town early enough to try out “Salt Lick BBQ”. Always heard good things and they were right.Very good stuff.
The doors opened at 8:00 and I got up front. The setlist was awesome. A little something from every album. With the songs from “Ramblin” and “Happy Woman Blues”, no one can say she isn’t singing the older songs on this tour. I never would have imagined I would get to hear “Motherless Children” and “Happy Woman Blues” in the same show. Hearing them made me come right home and give both albums a new listen.
The Faces cover of “Every Picture Tells A Story” was really good. So good, it should be offered as a download in the LW Store. hint hint.
What was the blues cover she did at the beginning of the encore? I wasn’t familiar with it.Go see this tour if you get a chance. The energy is great, the setlists are great and the sound is great! Hopefully she will be coming around again this summer or fall.
The blues cover is a song called The Things That I Used To Do. It was written by Guitar Slim who has become a blues legend much like Robert Johnson and for all the same reasons -live fast die very young- he died in 1959 at age 32– only leaving behind about 30 or so recordings, which have been repackaged several times. Slim was legendary for wearing bright colorful suits and with hair sometimes dyed to match and also using a guitar cord estimated at 350 feet- long enough so he that he would finish the shows by leading the audience out to the parking lot and continue playing the whole time. With his master showmanship and flamboyance and unique ahead of his time guitar sound I’ve often thought of the Prince of his time. I can highly recommend his albums The Things That I Used To Do -The Complete Specialty Recordings or The Atco Sessions which he recorded for after he left Specialty. While they contain many of the same songs these two records cover pretty much everything he recorded.
This was my 3rd Lucinda show (first on this tour though…) and easily my favorite. The band was great, backing Lucinda extremely well from rockin’ extremes of Honey Bee, Joy, It’s A Long Way To The Top (and more!) as well as softer, acoustic treatments of some of her softer stuff like “Everything Has Changed” (a personal fave of mine) and “Side of the Road”. And of course, a lot of incredibe songs in between….
A great setlist, great energy, great sound and of course, great Lucinda! The last year or so has clearly been very good to her and from what I saw, it shows in the performances she’s giving on this tour. Don’t miss it! If she were playing in Austin again tonight, I would be there!
