As 2009 is coming at us so quickly I wanted to share some of the ideas we are considering for next year, and with that in mind, take a survey of this forum. Keep in mind that none of these ideas are in any way guaranteed to happen -just some things we are thinking about, but your opinions and viewpoints are very valued, so I thought i’d give this a shot. For each separate subject please rate it on a 1-10 level with 10 being the highest in regards to being the most meaningful or desired.
2009 is Lucinda’s 30th anniversary as a recording artist and as part of that we are considering a campaign including the the following options:
1) Shows that would have a chronological setlist like the second set of the first show in Mpls or the show in Madison (1-10)
2) Shows that would have split sets -with the first set being ballads etc, a break, and then the second set being rock (1-10)
3) Similar to number 2– in larger cities where we could do it or where the right venue exists–doing two nights, with the first night being the ballads etc and the second night more rock (1-10)
4) Closing the year with a return of the album shows -probably only in one city (1-10)
5) Don’t change anything -I like the shows as they are. (1-10)
In a different and more general category:
1) To offset the venues that charge Ticketmaster fees -we are considering offering those fees back as a credit at the merch table -does this have appeal (1-10)2) Being aware of the past fan club fiasco- does a fan club hold any appeal if it made sense and had value? (1-10)
3) The possibility of being able to buy tickets before the general public -(possibly as part of a fan club?) (1-10)
4) More live releases -(possibly as part of a fan club?) (1-10)

1) Chronological set list 3 – This is great occasianally, but the best part about Lucinda is how she mixes up her shows. 7
2) Split sets – We want to jump up and start dancing from the first song, and end up with a great encore. We want the great old songs sprinkled in between and enjoy the mellow ones along with the new songs too. 6
3) Two nights – A local band (Over The Rhine – OTR) that is making it nationally is doing a two set weekend this December. The first night is their first decade and the second night is their second decade. I wouldn’t miss either night. They opened our new National City Pavilion this summer playing their double album “Ohio” – what an awesome show. So that’s kind of an example for you. Give Linford or Karin a call. 9
4) Return of the album shows – I’d definitely go to NYC for this but not LA. 10
5) Don’t change anything – I like the shows as they are – This is not to far from the truth.
Other ideas:
1) Credit at the merch table – Tom, I just want to support my favorite artists, I dont need a credit. Ticketmaster’s just trying to make a buck. 4
2) Does a fan club hold any appeal – Am i dim? I thought this was the fan club. 5
3) buy tickets before the general public – Ding ding ding ding. I only go to shows I have great seats at, but if Lucinda likes GA…..? At the JCM show this summer Lafayette showed me the special tent they had for the dedicated fans before and after the show. You could try this. I’d bite. 10
4b) Prefer cd (10) – I like to own what I buy. iTunes likes to control it after they sell it 7
5) What cities have we missed? Come to Cincinnati. The Taft is a great venue. 10
6) what did I miss? — We have a framed OTR lithograph which was not inexpensive hanging on our wall. I was disappointed that no LW posters were available at the Columbus show. I’d go on a cruise, or go to the Atlantis on Paradise Island to see a LW show. 8

Congratulations, 30 years is quite an accomplishment!
My 2 cents…
1) chronological setlist…8
2) split sets…10 YES!
3) multiple nights…10
4) album shows…10 especially if they are within a reasonable drive from Buffalo!! Toronto??
5) don’t change… 7 I try to catch a handful of shows every tour, so I would love to see more variety within the setlists. I’ve noticed Lu mixes it up more and more as the tour rolls on, this is a good thing. My dream show would be 1st set acoustic, and 2nd set electric. Best of both worlds.General Stuff

4) more live releases… 10 YES!!! I would prefer cd to digital. Personal request, Cleveland solo acoustic with Doug. I think it was March of 06. I’m sure there are many gems, old and new. Please consider releasing them in some way, shape, or form.

6) You guys have my vote. I appreciate all you have done, and are doing. Keep up the great work. 2009 is going to be a year to remember.Hi all, saw LW in Des Moines, Iowa at a beautiful and intimate setting of a small theater. L was fabulous and Buick Six was very nice as well. Buick Six admitted that they had just recorded their first CD; anyone know where I might find a copy please?

My “1-10” ratings to your ideas (my “vote” is in red & bold):
1) Chronological Setlists – 9 – I love this idea, but would like to see the ballads & the rockers, the country songs and the blues, etc., all intermingled through the show just like Lu has done through the years (30!!). I like to get up and party, but I need to catch my breath between songs at times. I like the mix & the surprises.
2) Split Sets by “Genre” – 3 – I’m not too keen on this idea (although I’d still go!!) for the reasons stated above in #1. A like Lu mixing it up – that’s one of the reasons I love her art.
3) Two Nights Split by “Genre” – 4 – again, I like it all jumbled together on any given night, but I gave this one a higher vote than #2 ’cause I’m greedy & would like to see her two (or more) nights in a row. 😉
4) Album shows at years end – 10 – You know my thoughts on this if you remember what I said to you in Nashville – I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this, especially if it were close to home!!! Even if it weren’t, I’d probably have to go no matter where it is. That’s what home equity lines are for ( 😈 ), & I kick myself repeatedly for missing the LA shows.
5) Don’t Change the Shows as They Are Now – 8 – I think Lu does a pretty good job mixing things up on any given night and, since that’s what I like, I say keep the status quo. Adding the “chronological” twist while keeping the mix of types of songs would be fun – case in point, look at the Webcast thread where several of us were trying to guess what song was coming up next…
Your other ideas –
1) Merch Table Credits for TM Fees – 5 – I like this idea OK, but only if y’all have some XXL or 3XL shirts!! Otherwise, keep the money & buy everyone in the band & on the road crew a steak dinner! 😆
2) New Fan Club – 9 – Even after having been one of the ones who paid for the last fan club w/ little to no benefit (I did get a T-shirt that is too small!), I would support a real fan club backed by Lu’s management & having real benefits. And, in case it does happen, I hereby volunteer to be the Atlanta chapter president! 😆 😆 😆
3) Ticket Pre-Sales – 10 – Definitely! A good place to start regarding benefits for the potential new fan club members.
4) More Live Releases – 10 – Definitely! Another good possible benefit for the as-of-yet-not-formed new fan club. And, I would encourage y’all to make it as easy and inexpensive on yourselves as possible. No need for elaborate post-production, packaging, etc. Just give us the live show as it happened, “warts” and all. Keep it real. BUT, I would prefer a CD option. I like having the flexibility of picking my own bitrate for my iPod – along with the added flexibility that only CDs give of re-ripping & re-encoding later at a higher bitrate when I get an iPod w/ more disc space / memory…

1. Chronological setlist: Rate at 9. Or try a variation, with 2 nights of Chronological shows, with one night ending after Sweet Old World or Car Wheels, and the second night finishing up from the first night.
2. Split sets: Rate at 9. Not to quibble over terms, but instead of ballads, how about unplugged or acoustic: essentially, songs where Lucinda plays only her Gibson J-45; a set of Side of the Road, Pineola, The Night’s Too Long, Everything Has Changed, Minneapolis, Something About What Happens, People Talkin’, Concrete and Barbed Wire, etc.
3. Two nights: Rate at 10, with the ballad term as commented above.
4. Album shows: Rate at 7, but keep some spacing between the nights.
5. No change: Rate at 3. I’d like some change–right now, the second half of the shows is too predictable. Once Lucinda straps on her rock guitar, I know what’s coming; shake up the shows a bit.
For the other category:
1. Fees: No opinion.
2. Fan club: Might make sense, if a real value; schedule a reception with Lucinda BEFORE a show, so fans can meet Lu and each other, possibly stand/sit together, if General Admission.
3. Early ticketing: good idea, IF the presale tickets are truly better than the regular tickets.
4. Releases: No opinion.
5. Cities missed. As a variation, what about type of venues in the cities? For example, in San Diego, how about 4th & B (stand-up dance floor), instead of Humphrey’s (reserved plastic chairs)?
6. Suggestions: I know this is difficult: but, how about NO opening act, unless it’s named Carrie Rodriguez.
Fan from Europe (not so many people for the shows)
1. Chronological setlist: Rate at 10. Or try 2 songs from each album + 4 from Honey Bee + 2 covers not necessary chronological.2. Split sets: Rate at 5. Would prefer an acoustic set in the middle à la Neil Young.
3. Two nights: Rate at 8 if the ticket for the 2nd night is half price.
4. Album shows: Rate at 10, but keep some spacing between the nights (avoid european market for that).
5. No change: Rate at 8. Real love is the best openning song and it’s nice to discover the set list…
For the other category:
1. Fees: No opinion.
2. Fan club: schedule a reception with Lucinda before or after a show, so fans can meet Lu and each other, possibly stand/sit together, if General Admission.
3. Early ticketing: good idea, IF the presale tickets are truly better than the regular tickets. But general admission at least for the first rows is preferable.
4. Releases: 10++ with CDs.
5. Cities missed. European tour this summer. Many festivals just in France : Blois, Paris (sur la seine), festival des charrues near Rennes, eurockpeennes, Benicassim in Spain…
6. Suggestions : Lucinda could avoid to say “you’re the best audience” each night.
1) Shows that would have a chronological setlist like the second set of the first show in Mpls or the show in Madison. 5 – I’m pretty much neutral on this one. I tend to order the songs in my head in the order that I bought the albums – which is pretty random.
2) Shows that would have split sets -with the first set being ballads etc, a break, and then the second set being rock. 8 – I like this idea a lot better.
3) Similar to number 2– in larger cities where we could do it or where the right venue exists–doing two nights, with the first night being the ballads etc and the second night more rock. 6 – My concern with this one is that the ‘larger city’ in the UK would almost certainly be London – spending two nights down there would be expensive and a half for me!
4) Closing the year with a return of the album shows -probably only in one city 5 – and that one city would probably be in another country as far as I am concerned – I suppose if I won that lottery… must buy a ticket!
5) Don’t change anything -I like the shows as they are. 7 – The show I caught in minneapolis was pretty close to perfect, although it was pretty close to option 3 in format anyway.
In a different and more general category:
1) To offset the venues that charge Ticketmaster fees -we are considering offering those fees back as a credit at the merch table -does this have appeal 10 – I think this is a wonderful gesture – although boycotting toutmaster altogether would be better.2) Being aware of the past fan club fiasco- does a fan club hold any appeal if it made sense and had value? 10 – Very much so!
3) The possibility of being able to buy tickets before the general public -(possibly as part of a fan club?) 10 – especially if those tickets were NOT at an inflated price, as some pre-sales seem to be.
4) More live releases -(possibly as part of a fan club?) (1-10) 10 – Neutral on the format as long as the digital quality is high enough.

6) And last but not least, what did I miss?–consider this the suggestion box. Simultaneous, identical releases in both the USA and the rest of the world. We are in a global economy nowadays.

1. Meet and Greets.
2. Exclusive digital downloads.
3. Ticket buying oppourtunities.

Here is a partial response for now to the survey. As far as missed cities in 08’………..PLEASE COME TO THE BALTIMORE-DC AREA! Still patiently waiting to get my fix. Tom, thanks for all the care and concern that you put into this website as is evidenced by the vast improvements lately. Again I’m casting my vote for Rams Head Live in Baltimore as my 1st choice of a venue in this area.

Personally, I’d love this. As a huge fan of the S/T album I often wish is it was more represented in her sets and this would ensure it would be.2) Shows that would have split sets -with the first set being ballads etc, a break, and then the second set being rock (1-10)

I appreciate the sentiment with this idea but I don’t think it’s necessary. I know this may be difficult but perhaps part of the proposed fanclub there could be more opportunities to meet Lucinda at shows? Meet and Greets perhaps. Maybe allowing fan club members to volunteer to sell merch. A song request feature?
