I was wondering if anyone on the board knows what kind of tape recorder is pictured on the inside sleeve of Essence? The picture where it has her guitar, notebook and tape-recorder sitting on her table. Thanks for any info -Andrew

p.s. I love the new album.Whomever said that this new album is not lyrically driven is dead wrong! Every lucinda record is lyrically driven, thats what she is,a songwriter!

Im very surprised there’s not one single person on this board that is a musician or producer that does not know what kind of tape recorder lucinda uses,or the one pictures in Essence. Thanks for all the help!!! 😉

I’m not sure if it is what’s on the table in the Essence photo, but what she was using up until a year ago was just a basic Panasonic handheld dictaphone. She would just use it to put down rough song ideas -she didn’t really use it to record full demos per se. For example on the new record she had written the lyrics to Plan To Marry and then used the handheld to put down the basic melody so she didn’t lose it.
When she got to the studio she recorded the version thats on the record with the idea that she was showing it to the band. The noise you hear at the very beginning is her writing -making some last minute lyric notes. When she finished it was apparent that something very special had been captured -and though it was tried again a couple of times -including a band version–nothing ever came close. So the album version is literally the first time she ever played the song from beginning to end.

That is an incredible insight IJ. My first thought upon hearing the track was something very similar.

One of the things I love most about the new album is the spontaneity of it – most tracks have the air of a work-in-progress, captured at a particularly ‘right’ moment, rather than a fully polished, and over-sanitised, ‘finished’ version.

And for me, that humanity is the greatest thing about it.

WOW..Just as i’m sitting here writing this i’m watching House and “Are you alright?” just came on…Thanks for the info.In the interviews i’ve read she mentions her little recorder quite a bit. When i bought the new record and came to that song i thought the same thing, cause usually in the studio that kind of noise is deleted and/or cleaned up,but i like that they left it in,makes it feel more human and alive. 😀
